BMW X2 Diesel DPF Warning: Black Smoke and Power Loss

Hi there! I have some experience with BMWs and went through something very similar with my 2018 BMW X1 diesel last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, warning lights, drop in power, and that nasty black smoke. Turned out my exhaust back pressure sensor was faulty, causing incorrect DPF readings. My trusted mechanic replaced the sensor and cleared the fault codes. Total bill was around 245 Euro, but it completely solved the issue. I also had them check the entire exhaust system just to be safe. I've seen quite a few X1s and X2s with this problem, it's not uncommon in these models. Before you head to the dealer, could you share: Current mileage? How long has this been happening? Any recent engine work done? This might help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had or something else.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's done 130806 KM and just had its service last month. Been dealing with these symptoms for about 2 weeks now. Interesting that you mention the back pressure sensor, definitely gives me something specific to ask the mechanic about. The dealer quoted me an insane amount without even seeing the car, so I'm glad to hear it might be something more straightforward. Did you notice if the issues got worse during cold starts? That's when mine seems to act up the most.

Hey again! Yeah, I remember the cold start issues too with my X1. The symptoms definitely got worse during cold starts, lots of smoke and that rough idle until it warmed up. Actually, thinking back, that was one of the first signs something wasn't right. After getting my back pressure sensor replaced, I learned these symptoms can also pop up if you do lots of short trips without letting the engine get properly warm. Since your mileage is pretty similar to what mine was (I was around 125000 km when it happened), and you're seeing the same cold start issues, I'm even more convinced it could be the same problem. Quick tip from my experience, before you take it in, try taking it for a good 20-30 minute drive at steady speed on main roads. This sometimes helps the DPF do a regeneration cycle. If the issue improves even temporarily, that's another sign pointing to the pressure sensor. My mechanic explained that a faulty sensor can interrupt these normal regeneration cycles. Let me know what your mechanic says. Would be interesting to see if it's the same fix as mine. These BMWs are great cars but they can be a bit sensitive with their DPF systems!

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! I actually tried your suggestion about the longer drive yesterday, did about 25 minutes at steady speed. While it didn't completely fix things, I noticed the smoke was definitely less severe afterward. That makes me feel more optimistic about it being the sensor rather than a complete DPF failure. I've booked it in with an independent BMW specialist for next week, quoted me way less than the dealer, and they seem to know exactly what to look for thanks to your input about the back pressure sensor. Will definitely get them to check the regeneration cycles too. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, saved me from panicking about potentially massive repair bills. Will let you know how it goes once they've had a look at it. These diesels can be tricky beasts, but when they're running right, they're fantastic cars!
