BMW X2 Key Fob Dead? Remote Entry Issues Solved Here
Summary of the thread
The conversation revolves around a 2019 BMW X2 experiencing remote entry issues, suspected to be due to a low key fob battery. A similar issue was resolved in a 2017 BMW X1 by replacing the key fob battery, which required no reprogramming and restored all functions immediately. The problem is likely the same for the X2, as indicated by a "key fob battery low" warning and the key working when held against the steering column. The suggested solution is to replace the battery with a CR2032, a common type, which should resolve the issue without additional complications.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I've got pretty much the exact same symptoms with my X2, which has 148401 KM on it. Just had it serviced last month and everything else was fine. The key does work when I hold it against the steering column, so that's a relief! The message I'm getting says "key fob battery low" along with a little key symbol. Your suggestion about the battery makes total sense, and honestly, I'm hoping it's just that simple! Quick question though, did you need to reprogram anything after the battery replacement, or was it just plug-and-play? Really appreciate the help!

Hey there again! Glad to help a fellow BMW owner. In my case with the X1, it was totally straightforward, just a simple battery swap, no reprogramming needed at all. It was literally plug-and-play, which was a huge relief. When they changed my key fob battery, the car recognized it immediately. All the keyless functions came back right away, the remote locking, the push start, everything. Since you're seeing that specific "key fob battery low" message (which is exactly what I had), and the key works when held against the steering column (just like mine did), I'm even more convinced it's the same issue. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, I actually learned you can check the battery level in the iDrive system under vehicle settings. Might be worth taking a look there too. The battery they used in my key was a CR2032, if I remember correctly. Super common type. Given everything you've described, especially that warning message, I'd say you're dealing with the exact same thing I had. Shouldn't be anything to worry about!

Thanks so much for all this detailed info, you're a lifesaver! Just checked the iDrive system like you suggested, and yep, battery level is showing really low. That CR2032 battery tip is super helpful too. Think I'll grab one tomorrow and give it a try, especially since you've confirmed there's no reprogramming needed. Such a relief it's probably just this simple fix! Really appreciate you walking me through your experience, definitely helped calm my nerves about the whole thing. Nice to know it's a straightforward fix that won't break the bank. Will let you know how it goes after I get that battery changed!

Hi! I have some experience with BMWs and had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW X1. The symptoms were exactly the same, remote wouldn't work and got that annoying warning message. Took it to my usual workshop, and yep, turned out to be just a dead key fob battery. They replaced it in about 15 minutes, cost me 37 Euro including labor. Been working perfectly since then. Just to make sure we're dealing with the same issue, does your key still work when you hold it directly against the steering column to start the car? Also, what exact warning message are you seeing on the dash? Let me know and I might be able to share more specific details! By the way, before going to the workshop, I tried checking if the key would still work manually with the physical key blade, which it did, that's another way to confirm it's likely just a battery issue.
