BMW X2 Limp Mode: Bad Exhaust Sensor Warning Signs

Hey all! My 2021 BMW X2 (gas engine, 149k km) has been acting up lately. The check engine light is on, power feels reduced, and I'm burning through more fuel than usual. The car's in some kind of emergency/limp mode, and I suspect it might be the exhaust temp sensor causing all this trouble. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was your repair experience like? Had a bad experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Any insights would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance

Summary of the thread

A 2021 BMW X2 is experiencing issues such as a check engine light, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption, indicating it might be in limp mode. The suspected cause is a faulty exhaust temperature sensor. A similar case involved a cracked exhaust manifold affecting sensor readings, requiring both manifold and sensor replacement. The recommended solution is a diagnostic scan to confirm if it's the sensor or a more extensive issue, with timely repair advised to prevent further complications.

Hey there! I had similar issues with my 2018 BMW X1 last year. The symptoms matched yours exactly, check engine light, limp mode, and terrible fuel economy. Initially thought it was just the sensor, but my mechanic found a crack in the exhaust manifold that was causing leaks near the temperature sensor. The leak was letting in extra air, throwing off all the readings. The repair involved replacing both the damaged manifold and the sensor since they were both compromised. It was a serious job that took two days to complete properly. The car's been running like new since then, no more limp mode, normal power, and fuel consumption is back to normal. My advice would be to get it checked soon. These symptoms usually don't fix themselves and can lead to bigger problems if left unchecked. A good diagnostic scan should quickly pinpoint if it's just the sensor or something more extensive like in my case. Best of luck with the repair.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the manifold issue, I'll definitely keep that in mind. Quick question though: do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything stayed running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Just want to get an idea of what I might be in for with this repair.

Hey again! Got good news to share! Just wanted to update you on my situation since you asked. I actually just got my X1 back from the mechanic last week. Turns out it was indeed the exhaust temperature sensor playing up, but way less complicated than my previous repair I mentioned. They found and fixed a minor leak in the exhaust system, replaced the faulty sensor, and now she's running perfectly again. The total damage was 265 €, not too bad considering what I was worried it might be! Everything's stayed spot-on since the fix, power's back to normal, fuel consumption's where it should be, and that annoying check engine light is finally off. No other issues have cropped up either. This repair was much simpler than the manifold problem I had before. If your symptoms are similar, hopefully you'll get lucky like me this time around and it'll just be the sensor. Fingers crossed for you! Let me know how it turns out when you get yours checked!

Hey, thanks so much for following up! Just wanted to let you know I finally got my car sorted. Took it to a mechanic last week and you won't believe what happened. Not only did they find the faulty sensor, but there was also a small crack in the connecting pipe that was causing all sorts of havoc. The whole repair ended up being pricier than I expected, almost double what you paid, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The mechanic was actually really great, super transparent about what needed fixing and even showed me the damaged parts. Such a relief after my previous bad experiences. The car's running like a dream now, way better than before. No more check engine light, got my power back, and my fuel consumption has dropped back to normal. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me know what to expect and gave me the push I needed to get it checked out sooner rather than later. Thanks again for all your help!
