BMW X2 Stalling Mystery: Engine Cuts Out at Idle

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X1 last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, unusual stalling and that annoying check engine light. Turned out to be a faulty wiring harness connector at the fuel pump module. Took it to my regular garage, and they found corroded pins in the connector that were causing intermittent electrical issues. The fix involved replacing the entire wiring harness assembly and the connector. It wasn't a minor job since they had to drop the fuel tank to access everything properly. Not trying to scare you, but electrical issues can be tricky to diagnose. My advice would be to find a garage that specializes in BMW diagnostics. This isn't something you want a general mechanic guessing at, especially with these newer models and their complex systems. Since getting it fixed, the car's been running perfectly, no more stalling or warning lights. Let me know if you need more specific info about the repair process. Best of luck!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's super helpful since I've been worried about the repair costs. If you don't mind me asking, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the wiring harness replacement? Also, has everything stayed problem-free since the repair, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? I'm trying to figure out if I should prepare myself for a big bill and want to make sure it's actually going to solve the problem long-term.

Hey again! Great news, I got my car sorted and it was actually much simpler (and cheaper!) than my initial wiring harness issue. Turns out it was just a loose cable connection to the fuel pump module and some bad gas that was causing all the drama. The mechanic found the problem pretty quickly, guess all that worrying was for nothing! Only cost me 95 € to fix the cable connection, which was such a relief compared to what I was expecting. They also cleaned out the fuel system to deal with the contaminated fuel. Since then, my X1's been running like a dream, no stalling, no warning lights, nothing. It's been about 8 months now and absolutely zero issues. Much better outcome than when I had that whole wiring harness replaced last year! Sometimes the simple fixes are the best ones. Trust me, your wallet will be much happier if it turns out to be something similar. Definitely worth getting it checked out sooner rather than later though, these kinds of problems can get worse if you leave them too long. Hope this helps put your mind at ease a bit! Let me know how it goes with yours.

Thanks so much for the update! I actually just got back from a new mechanic I tried, and you wouldn't believe it, my situation turned out pretty similar to yours. After dreading another expensive repair, it was just a clogged fuel filter and some dirt in the fuel injectors that was causing all the trouble. The whole thing, including parts and labor, came to about €200. They did a full fuel system cleaning and replaced the filter. The mechanic was super thorough and showed me exactly what was wrong. Such a relief after all that stress! The car's running perfectly now, no more stalling, and that pesky check engine light has finally stayed off. Lesson learned though, I'll definitely be more careful about where I fuel up from now on. And you were right about getting it checked sooner rather than later. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me feel less anxious about the whole situation! Think I've finally found a reliable mechanic too, which is a huge bonus after my last terrible experience. What a weight off my shoulders!
