Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's at 132960 KM, and I just had a service last month. The symptoms started about a week ago, mostly when the car's warmed up. Haven't managed to get the error codes yet, but the grinding noise is definitely worse during highway speeds. After reading about your TCU issues, I'm a bit worried mine might have the same problem. The 1000 euro repair cost actually sounds better than what I was imagining! Did you notice any other warning signs before your TCU completely failed? Also, how long did the repair take?
Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, those symptoms sound really similar to what I dealt with. My X1 was around 125,000 KM when it started acting up, so pretty close to your mileage. Before my TCU completely failed, I noticed a few warning signs I hadn't mentioned earlier. The transmission would sometimes hesitate between gears, especially between 3rd and 4th. It started subtly at first, just a slight delay in response when accelerating. Then it got progressively worse over about two weeks until that grinding noise became really obvious. The repair on mine took about two days total, but that included diagnostics and waiting for parts. The actual work was only about 4-5 hours. My mechanic said these TCU issues are somewhat common in our generation of BMWs, especially after the 100,000 KM mark. One thing I learned from my experience, don't keep driving it too long with these symptoms. I pushed mine for about a week after the grinding started, and my mechanic later told me I was lucky not to cause any additional damage to the transmission itself. Just a heads up, if it is the TCU, make sure they check the wiring harness too. In my case, there was some minor corrosion in the connections that they fixed while they were in there. Might save you from future headaches!
Thanks so much for all the details! That matches exactly what I'm experiencing, the hesitation between gears and that delay in response. Really helpful to know about the wiring harness too. Definitely not going to risk driving it much longer, especially after hearing about your experience. I'll call the workshop tomorrow and get it booked in. Two days without the car isn't ideal, but better than risking more damage. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this. Fingers crossed it's just the TCU and nothing more serious! Will update once I get it checked out.
Hey there! I've got some experience with BMWs and had a similar transmission issue with my 2019 BMW X1. It's like I'm reading about my own problem from back then! I was getting those exact symptoms, rough shifts, grinding, and slipping. The transmission warning light drove me nuts for days before I finally took it to my trusted workshop. Turned out the transmission control unit was failing, which explained all those symptoms. The repair set me back about 1000 Euro, but it fixed everything completely. I've had my X1 for a few years now and worked on basic maintenance stuff, so I'd say I have some experience with these cars, especially the newer models like the X1 and X2. Could you tell me if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, when did these symptoms first start, and does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm? This info would help me share more relevant details from my experience.
