BMW X2 VANOS Issues, Power Loss and Failed Emissions

Hey everyone! My 2022 BMW X2 has been acting up lately. The engine light is on, and I'm dealing with poor fuel economy and significant power loss. The idle is also rough, and it failed emissions. I suspect it might be the inlet VANOS system, but I'd like to hear from others who've faced similar issues. Has anyone had this fixed? What was your repair experience and cost like? Looking forward to your insights. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2022 BMW X2 owner experienced engine light activation, poor fuel economy, power loss, rough idle, and failed emissions, suspecting the inlet VANOS system as the cause. Another BMW owner shared a similar experience, attributing the issues to a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, which was resolved by replacing the valve and resetting the system. The original issue was confirmed to be a clogged VANOS solenoid, which was repaired, restoring the car's performance. It was advised to use high-quality oil and adhere to service intervals to prevent future problems.

Hi there! I've got some experience with BMWs and had a pretty similar issue with my 2020 BMW X1 last year. I was getting the same symptoms, engine light, terrible fuel consumption, and the car felt really sluggish. My mechanic diagnosed it as a faulty camshaft solenoid valve. The repair, including parts and labor, set me back around 250 Euro. They had to replace the valve and reset the system, but it's been running perfectly since then. I'd recommend getting it checked out soon because these issues can get worse if left unattended. Do you notice if the problems are more apparent when the engine is cold or after it's warmed up? Also, what kind of error code is your engine light showing? Having that information would help pinpoint if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Just curious, are you taking it to a BMW dealer or an independent shop? Might be able to suggest some tips based on my experience. Let me know more details about your situation, and I'll try to help further!

Hey! Just had my car serviced last week at 67680 KM, and your symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced. My mechanic found that it was indeed the VANOS solenoid, spot on with your suspicion. They did a full diagnostic, and it turned out the solenoid was clogged with debris, causing those exact issues you're describing. The repair wasn't as painful as I expected, took about 4 hours of labor, and the parts weren't too expensive. If your symptoms match mine, I'd recommend getting it checked ASAP though, as driving with a faulty VANOS can cause more damage in the long run. Don't stress too much, it's a pretty common issue with these engines. Since yours is also a 2022 like mine, it should still be under warranty. Have you checked that out?

Hey again! Yeah, I remember helping you out with that VANOS issue earlier. Just saw your update about getting it fixed, that's great news! I actually had my X1 serviced recently too, and funny enough, I learned something interesting about these VANOS systems. After my solenoid replacement last year, my mechanic mentioned it's super important to use high-quality oil and stick to the recommended service intervals. Apparently, that helps prevent debris buildup like what you experienced. Since my repair, I've been really careful about maintenance, and it's made a huge difference. The car's running smooth as butter now, no more power issues or weird idling. And my fuel consumption is back to normal too. Good call on mentioning the warranty thing, that would've saved me some cash if my car was still covered when I had the problem! But hey, at least the repair wasn't too expensive, and now we both know what to look out for. Quick tip: I've started keeping track of my fuel consumption just to make sure everything stays running properly. Might be worth doing the same with your X2, just to catch any issues early if they pop up again. Let me know how your car runs after a few thousand kilometers, always curious to hear long-term feedback on these repairs!

Thanks for the follow-up and the maintenance tips! Yeah, my X2 is running like a dream now, feels like a completely different car. You're absolutely right about the oil quality, my mechanic mentioned the same thing. I've already started using the premium stuff they recommended. That's a smart idea about tracking fuel consumption. I've actually downloaded a fuel tracking app since the repair, and I'm seeing much better numbers now, pretty much back to what they should be. The engine's super smooth, especially during cold starts, which used to be a real pain point. I really appreciate all your help with this. It's great to hear from someone who went through the same thing and came out the other side. I'll definitely keep an eye on things and stick to those service intervals religiously from now on. Preventive maintenance is way better than dealing with these issues again! I'll keep you posted on how it goes over the next few months. Thanks again for all your advice, it really helped me understand what I was dealing with!
