BMW X2 Won't Start: Fuel Pump or Something Else?
Summary of the thread
A 2023 BMW X2 is experiencing starting issues, rough idling, and increased fuel consumption, with the check engine light on. The owner suspects a fuel pump problem but is advised by another BMW owner that similar symptoms in their vehicle were due to a faulty wiring connection to the fuel injection system, not the fuel pump. The error code P0171 and a clicking sound suggest a wiring issue, possibly related to the fuel pressure sensor. The owner plans to have the wiring checked at the service center, hoping for a simple fix rather than a costly fuel pump replacement.

Thanks for the detailed response! At 71802 KM and coming from my last service just two weeks ago, I'm a bit surprised to face these issues. I'm getting error code P0171 (system too lean), and it definitely struggles more when the engine is cold. There's also this clicking sound when I turn the key. Made me really worried since this X2 is practically new. I'll have them check the wiring connections you mentioned, much rather it be that than a fuel pump replacement! Thanks for the tip, really hoping it's just a simple fix like yours was.

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details. You know what? That P0171 code and the clicking sound really rings a bell, had the exact same thing on my X1! When you mentioned the clicking and cold start issues, it actually makes me even more convinced it's similar to what I dealt with. In my case, the damaged wire was specifically connected to the fuel pressure sensor, which explains why it mimicked fuel pump problems. That clicking noise you're hearing? That's exactly what I heard too, it's the system trying to build up fuel pressure but getting inconsistent signals. Since you just had a service, I'd actually suggest going back to them first. My wire issue started right after a service too, think someone might have accidentally nicked the cable while working on something else. Pretty common actually, especially since these new BMWs have such tight engine compartments. One quick thing you can try before taking it in: listen carefully near the fuel tank when someone turns the key to "ON" position (but don't start the engine). You should hear a brief whirring sound that lasts about 2 seconds. If you hear that, your fuel pump is at least activating properly, which would support the wiring theory rather than a pump failure. Let me know what you find out, really curious if it's the same issue I had!

Thanks so much for the follow-up and that really helpful tip about listening near the fuel tank! I just tried it with my neighbor, we definitely heard the whirring sound you mentioned, which is such a relief. It does make the wiring theory seem more likely. You're absolutely right about going back to the service center too, I've already called them and they're taking it in tomorrow morning. The fact that you had such a similar experience with your X1, right down to the same error code and clicking sound, really puts my mind at ease. I was getting worried about having to shell out for a new fuel pump, but this sounds much more manageable. I'll make sure to specifically mention the wire connection to the fuel pressure sensor when I take it in. I'll update you on what they find, fingers crossed it's just a simple wire fix like yours was! Thanks again for all your help, it's been super valuable!

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Actually, faced something very similar with my 2021 BMW X1 last month. The symptoms were exactly what you're describing, rough idle, starting issues, and terrible fuel economy. Took it to my regular workshop, and turns out it wasn't the fuel pump, it was actually just a faulty wiring connection to the fuel injection system. The mechanic found a damaged cable that was causing intermittent connection issues. Total repair was 95 Euro, mostly labor costs for diagnosing and fixing the connection. Before you jump to conclusions about the fuel pump (which would be way more expensive), could you share: Any specific error codes you're getting? Does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm? Have you noticed any unusual noises when starting? Also, would help to know your mileage, these issues can vary depending on how much the car's been driven. Hope this helps point you in the right direction!
