BMW X2 Won't Start: Ignition Switch or Something Else?

Hey everyone! My 2021 BMW X2 with the gas engine is giving me trouble. When I try to start it, sometimes it won't turn over at all. Other times, the engine starts but runs rough and occasionally just dies. I suspect it might be the ignition switch, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW X1 last winter. After dealing with those exact symptoms, inconsistent starts and rough running, it turned out to be just a blown fuse in the ignition circuit. Had me worried it was something major at first! Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The technician replaced the faulty fuse, and it set me back about 52 Euro, way better than what I was expecting to pay. Since then, the car's been running perfectly fine. Could you share some more details about when this started happening? Also, does it happen more often when the engine is cold or warm? This info might help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had. The symptoms can be similar for different problems in these models. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any more info about what happened with my X1.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My situation seems a bit different though. I've had mine serviced regularly (last done at 70294 KM), and these issues started happening out of nowhere, regardless of engine temperature. Just this morning, it struggled to start again, but once it did, it ran fine for about 5 minutes before stalling at idle. I've noticed a slight clicking sound from the ignition when this happens, which made me think it might be the switch rather than a fuse. Did your car make any unusual sounds when you had the fuse problem? I'm hoping it's something simple like in your case, but I'm getting a bit worried since it's becoming more frequent.

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details. You know what? When I look back at my X1's issues, they were definitely different from what you're describing. My car didn't make any clicking sounds with the fuse problem, it was more of a straightforward "no power" situation. After hearing about the clicking sound and stalling issues you're having, I'm actually thinking it might not be the ignition switch either. Come to think of it, my 's X2 had very similar symptoms last year, and it turned out to be the fuel pump dying. The clicking sound and the way it runs for a few minutes before stalling really rings a bell. When my 's fuel pump was going bad, it would sometimes take multiple tries to start, and when it did run, it would suddenly cut out, just like what you're describing. The repair cost was higher than my fuse issue, but it completely solved the problem. Have you noticed any hesitation when accelerating? That's another thing my experienced before the fuel pump completely gave up. Might be worth getting that checked out. These newer BMWs can be tricky with their symptoms sometimes. Let me know what you find out, I'm curious to know if it's the same issue!

I appreciate everyone's input here. Based on the fuel pump suggestion, I did some research, and that actually makes a lot of sense. The symptoms match up pretty well with what I'm experiencing. Yes, now that you mention it, I have noticed some hesitation when accelerating, especially when merging onto highways. I hadn't connected that with the starting issues until now. I've just booked an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow. I'll make sure to have them check the fuel pump specifically, along with the ignition system just to be thorough. It's reassuring to know that others have dealt with similar issues and got them resolved. I was really worried it might be something more serious with the engine itself. I'll update everyone once I get the diagnosis. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experiences, it's been super helpful in narrowing down what might be wrong! It's great having a community to turn to for car advice.
