BMW X3 Engine Overheating With Multiple Warning Lights

Hey everyone! My 2012 BMW X3 (164k km, gas engine) is giving me serious headaches. The engine's running hot, switched to limp mode, and I've got both check engine and coolant warning lights blazing on my dash. There's also coolant leaking underneath. Previous mechanic mentioned something about a control unit communication error, but I'm not too confident in their diagnosis after a bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Really curious about your experiences and trusted mechanic recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had nearly identical issues with my 2015 BMW X1 last year. The symptoms match up perfectly with what I experienced, engine overheating, limp mode, warning lights, and coolant puddles. In my case, the water pump had failed, but the real culprit was a faulty DME (Digital Motor Electronics) connection that wasn't properly communicating with the cooling system. The wiring harness had corroded at one of the main connector points, causing intermittent communication failures. My trusted mechanic found that the control unit wasn't getting proper signals about coolant temperature, which made the system go haywire. They had to replace the wiring harness and clean up the connection points. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention to prevent engine damage. Based on your symptoms and my experience, I'd recommend getting the electrical connections checked first before jumping to major mechanical repairs. The communication error your previous mechanic mentioned could be spot-on.

Thanks so much for sharing that, it's super helpful! Your X1 situation sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Really glad you mentioned the wiring harness issue, definitely going to have that checked out first. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other cooling-related quirks?

Just wanted to follow up, glad I could help! After I got my X1 checked out by the mechanic, they confirmed it was indeed the connection issue causing all that trouble. They fixed the cable connection to the control unit, and it cost me 95 Euro, way less than I was expecting, honestly! Since the repair, my car's been running like a dream. No more overheating, no warning lights, and definitely no more puddles of coolant making a mess of my parking spot! The communication error hasn't popped up again either, so that's a massive relief. The mechanic explained they had to clean up and reseat some corroded connectors, plus replace a damaged section of the wiring. Money well spent if you ask me, especially considering how much a major engine repair would've cost if I'd left it unfixed. Hope this helps give you a better idea of what you might be looking at cost-wise. Keep us posted on how it goes with your X3!

Just wanted to give you a quick update! Finally got my X3 sorted out yesterday. You were absolutely right about getting those electrical connections checked first. Turns out my issue was pretty similar to yours, corroded connectors and a damaged section of wiring were the main culprits. The mechanic I went to found the problem pretty quickly. They cleaned up the connections, replaced the bad wiring section, and even gave everything a good inspection while they were at it. Bill came to about 120 bucks, such a relief compared to what I was imagining! Car's running perfectly now. No more warning lights, no limp mode, and the engine temp's staying right where it should. The coolant leak has completely stopped too. I'm really glad I asked here before jumping into any major repairs. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. You saved me from what could've been a much bigger headache!
