BMW X4 Engine Sputtering & Stalling: Seeking Solutions

Hey everyone! My 2018 BMW X4 (122k km) is giving me major headaches lately. The engine feels super weak, runs rough, and jerks when I hit the gas. It's also stalling at idle and the check engine light won't go off. Just failed emissions too. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X4? Thinking it might be fuel mixture related. Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations for fixing this. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had nearly identical issues with my 2015 BMW X3 last year. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, rough idle, poor acceleration, and unusual stalling. My check engine light was also constantly on. Turned out the fuel injectors were failing on cylinders 2 and 3. The garage diagnosed it using their diagnostic tool and confirmed it with injector leak tests. They ended up having to replace two injectors and clean the other ones. The job also included replacing all the seals since they had to remove the intake manifold. It was definitely a serious repair that needed immediate attention, running with faulty injectors can damage your catalytic converter and cause more engine problems down the line. After the fix, the engine ran smooth as new, and all the symptoms disappeared completely. Based on your description, I'd strongly suggest getting those injectors checked. Don't put it off too long, I learned that the hard way when I tried driving it for a few weeks with those symptoms. Best of luck with your X4!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! This definitely sounds similar to what I'm dealing with. Glad to hear you got yours sorted out with the injector replacement. Did you remember roughly how much the repair ended up costing you? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed? I want to make sure I budget properly if I need similar work done.

Hey again! Yes, absolutely, I had the work done and my X3 has been running like a dream since! The total bill came to 515 € for replacing the defective injection valve, and I'm happy to report it was worth every penny. The Mixture preparation error that was causing all those headaches is completely gone now. The best part is I haven't had a single issue since the repair, no more jerking, stalling, or rough running. The engine's back to its smooth, powerful self. My mechanic really knew what they were doing, and the diagnostic was spot-on. The check engine light hasn't come back on either. Trust me, getting it fixed properly is the way to go. Trying to limp along with faulty injectors will just lead to bigger problems down the road. Plus, you'll save money on fuel since the engine's running efficiently again. Hope this helps with your budgeting! Let me know if you need any other info about the repair.

Thanks for all those details! I actually bit the bullet and took my X4 to a new mechanic yesterday. You were spot on, it was definitely the fuel injectors causing all the trouble. Had two bad ones that needed replacing, plus they did a thorough cleaning of the fuel system. The bill came to a bit more than yours, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The difference in how the car runs now is like night and day. No more jerking, stalling, or rough idle. The check engine light finally turned off, and the engine feels strong again. Even managed to pass the emissions test after the fix! Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it sorted. The mechanic explained that running with bad injectors could've caused some serious damage if left unchecked. They were super professional and took the time to explain everything they were doing. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the right decision with my car!
