BMW X4 Mirror Systems Fail: Owners Seek Repair Solutions

Hey everyone! Need some advice about my 2018 BMW X4 (52k km, gas engine). My heated/auto-dimming side mirrors stopped working completely, and the diagnostic scan shows an error code. After a previous disappointing experience with my mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar mirror issues on their X4? What was the actual problem and repair cost? Any recommendations for fixing this would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW X3 last winter. The heated/dimming mirrors just quit working one day. After taking it to the garage, it turned out the wiring harness in the door had some damaged cables, and there was also a faulty connection at the mirror control module. The tech showed me how the wires had worn down from constant door movement, pretty common issue actually. They had to replace the wiring harness and resolder some connections. It wasn't a quick fix, but not super serious either. They also updated the mirror module software while they were at it. If you're seeing an error code, it's likely the same kind of electrical gremlin I dealt with. Would definitely get it checked out by someone who knows BMWs well, these mirror systems are more complex than they look. Best of luck sorting it out.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I had the exact same symptoms with my X4, and it's helpful to know about the wiring harness issue. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since they fixed it, or have you noticed any other electrical quirks? Just want to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if it's actually a long-term solution.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, I actually had my car checked by the mechanic last week, and it turned out to be much simpler (and cheaper!) than my initial wiring harness problem. They found a loose connection in the mirror heating component that they were able to fix pretty easily. Only cost me 95 € to get it sorted, which was a huge relief compared to what I was expecting! Everything's been working perfectly since the repair, both the heating and auto-dimming functions are back to normal. No more electrical issues at all. It's funny how sometimes what seems like a major problem turns out to be just a basic connection issue. Much better outcome than my previous experience with the wiring harness! If you're still having the issue, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out. Might be something similarly simple for your X4. These electrical gremlins can be tricky to diagnose, but once you find the actual problem, the fix isn't always as complicated (or expensive) as you might think. Let me know how it goes with yours!

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update everyone! Took your advice and had it checked out, turns out I worried for nothing. The issue was actually just a blown fuse and a minor connection problem. The mechanic fixed it in about an hour, and the total cost was way less than I expected, only around 120 bucks including labor! Both mirrors are now working perfectly again, the heating kicks in right away and the auto-dimming is as smooth as when the car was new. Such a relief it wasn't the complex wiring problem I was dreading. Really glad I didn't put off getting it fixed, especially with winter coming up. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. Sometimes these luxury car issues sound scarier than they actually are. Next time I won't stress so much before getting it checked out!
