BMW X4 Multiple Issues, EGR Valve or Something Worse?

Hi everyone! My 2016 BMW X4 is acting up with multiple symptoms that are driving me crazy. The engine power is down, I'm getting smoke under acceleration, and there's this annoying hissing sound. It's running rough, jerking during acceleration, and burning way more fuel than usual. The check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be the EGR valve, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar issues. Has anyone experienced this combination of problems? If so, what was the actual cause and how did your mechanic fix it? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Summary of the thread

A 2016 BMW X4 is experiencing multiple issues, including reduced engine power, smoke under acceleration, a hissing sound, rough running, jerking during acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and an illuminated check engine light. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the EGR valve, which is known to cause similar issues when clogged. A user with a similar experience recommended checking the EGR valve, as replacing it resolved their issues. They also advised using OEM parts and occasionally running the engine at higher RPMs to prevent future carbon build-up.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars (not a pro, but I've dealt with my share of issues). Had almost the exact same symptoms on my 2014 BMW X3 last year. The rough running, smoke, and high fuel consumption really had me worried. My local mechanic diagnosed it as a faulty EGR valve, it was completely clogged up. They cleaned it first, but it was too far gone and needed replacement. Total bill came to about 355 Euro, parts and labor included. Since the fix, the car's been running like new, no more smoke, normal fuel consumption, and smooth acceleration. Before I share more details about my experience, could you share: How many miles/kilometers are on your X4? Have you noticed any other warning lights besides the check engine light? Did these symptoms appear gradually or suddenly? This sounds very similar to my issue, but knowing these details would help confirm if we're dealing with the same problem.

Thanks for your reply! I've got 180152 KM on the clock and just had my service last month. Your experience sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. The warning lights started showing up gradually over the past couple of weeks, starting with just the check engine light. I'm definitely seeing the same symptoms you mentioned, the smoke and high fuel consumption are really concerning me. Think I'll get it checked out by a mechanic this week based on your experience. The price you mentioned for the repair sounds way better than what I was expecting, honestly. Really hoping it's just the EGR valve and nothing more serious!

Hey again! Thanks for those details, yep, that definitely sounds like what I dealt with. It's actually pretty common on these BMWs around that mileage. Just to share a bit more from my experience, after they replaced my EGR valve, it took about a tank of fuel for everything to settle completely. The computer needed to readjust to the new valve. One thing I learned is that these issues often start because of carbon build-up, which is pretty normal for our engines. Quick tip, after my repair, my mechanic suggested running the engine at higher RPMs occasionally (like on highway drives) to help prevent carbon build-up in the future. Been doing that and haven't had any issues since. The price I mentioned earlier included the OEM part, some shops might quote you less with aftermarket parts, but I'd recommend sticking with original BMW parts for the EGR valve. They tend to last longer. Let me know how it goes after you get it checked out. Really curious if it turns out to be the same issue. These X series engines are pretty similar, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's exactly what I went through.

Thanks so much for all the detailed advice! You've really put my mind at ease. That's super helpful to know about letting the computer adjust after the repair, I'll keep that in mind and won't panic if it's not perfect right away. Makes total sense about the carbon build-up too. I've actually booked it in for tomorrow morning at my regular mechanic. I'll definitely follow your advice about getting the OEM parts, don't want to risk having to do this repair twice! And thanks for the tip about running it at higher RPMs sometimes. I usually just do city driving, so that might explain why this happened. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I'll probably message back after the repair to let you know if it was indeed the EGR valve. Fingers crossed it's as straightforward as yours was!
