BMW X4 Power Loss and Rough Running, Need Diagnosis Help

Hi everyone! My 2018 BMW X4 has been acting up lately. I'm experiencing power loss, rough idling, jerking during acceleration, and the check engine light is on. I suspect the engine might be running lean, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. Did you manage to fix it, and what was the actual problem? Any advice on what the workshop found and repaired would be really helpful before I take mine in. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I have some experience working on cars and had a very similar issue with my 2016 BMW X3 last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through, especially that rough idle and power loss. It turned out to be a faulty fuel injector. Took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed and replaced the defective injector. The whole thing, including parts and labor, cost me around 515 Euro. Car has been running perfectly since then. This is actually a known issue that can happen with these engines. Before I can help more specifically, could you tell me what engine variant you have in your X4? Also, have you noticed any excessive fuel consumption or smoke from the exhaust? This info would help confirm if we're dealing with the same problem. By the way, if you haven't gotten it checked yet, don't wait too long, driving with a bad injector can cause more expensive damage down the line.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience. I have almost identical symptoms in my X4 with 153,258 KM on the clock. Just had my service done last month and everything was fine then. The issue started suddenly last week. Your fuel injector theory makes a lot of sense, I've noticed my fuel consumption has gone up quite a bit lately, though no smoke from the exhaust yet. I've got the 2.0L gasoline engine, and what you've described sounds spot on with what I'm experiencing. I'll definitely get it checked out ASAP based on your advice. Really good to know about the potential cost too, at least I won't be shocked when I get the bill! Did you notice any warning signs before your injector completely failed?

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, looking at your mileage and symptoms, I'm even more convinced it's the same injector issue I had. With my X3, I actually did notice some warning signs about two weeks before it got really bad, there was this slight hesitation when accelerating from a stop, especially when the engine was cold. I kind of ignored it at first (bad move on my part!). The funny thing is, my car had almost the same mileage when it happened, around 149,000 KM. These 2.0L engines are generally really solid, but the injectors seem to be a bit of a weak point. When mine started acting up, the fuel consumption increase was one of the first things I noticed too. Quick tip from my experience, when you take it in, ask them to check all the injectors while they're at it. My mechanic said it's common for them to wear at similar rates, and I actually ended up replacing two instead of one as a preventive measure. Saved me another trip to the workshop a few months later. Also, worth mentioning that after the repair, my fuel consumption went back to normal and the engine felt even smoother than before. It's definitely worth getting it sorted quickly!

Thanks so much for all this detailed information, it's been incredibly helpful! I've actually just booked my X4 in for tomorrow morning at the workshop. I'll definitely take your advice about getting all the injectors checked while they're working on it. Better to catch any potential issues now than have to go back again soon. It's reassuring to know this is a known issue and fixable. What really caught my attention was how similar our situations are, almost identical mileage when the problem started, same initial symptoms with the fuel consumption increase, and that hesitation you mentioned. I've actually noticed that hesitation during cold starts too, just didn't connect the dots until now. I'll remember to ask them to inspect all the injectors and might just follow your lead on replacing any that look worn, even if they're not completely failed yet. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's made me feel much more confident about dealing with this issue! I'll update the thread once I get it sorted. Thanks again for all your help!

If you've already checked for vacuum leaks and the 2BC0 code persists, the next step is to inspect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. A faulty MAF sensor can cause incorrect air-fuel mixture readings, leading to this error code. Try cleaning the MAF sensor with a dedicated MAF cleaner, as dirt or debris can affect its performance. If cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, consider testing or replacing the sensor. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
