Hi, yeah, going through a similar headache with my X4 right now. I've only done 128002 KM since my last service, and it's frustrating to deal with this on such a new car. Just had my key fob battery replaced thinking that might solve it, but no luck. Really helpful to hear about your experience with the door handle module. Since posting, I've noticed the driver's side handle sometimes feels a bit sluggish when trying to unlock. Started keeping track of when it happens, and it seems more frequent on cold mornings. Definitely worth checking out that door handle unit you mentioned. Also tried disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes yesterday, seemed to work at first but then same issues came back after a few hours. Going to book it in for a diagnosis next week, hoping it's just the handle unit like in your case and not something more complex. Will keep you posted on what they find!

Hey there again! Thanks for the update on your X4. Funny enough, I had the exact same experience with the cold morning behavior on my X3! The sluggish door handle response was definitely a red flag, and it matches what I went through perfectly. That battery disconnect trick you tried? Did the same thing myself before taking it to the workshop, got my hopes up when it temporarily worked, but yeah, those issues came creeping back. Really frustrating when you think you've solved it only to have it fail again. Quick thing about the service interval, mine started acting up around 130000 KM, so pretty close to where you're at now. When they replaced my door handle unit, the mechanic mentioned these issues are becoming more common in the newer models because of all the fancy electronics they're cramming into the handles. Let me know what the workshop says when you get it checked. If it turns out to be the same handle unit issue, make sure they do a full system reset after the replacement. Mine needed that extra step to get everything working properly again. The temporary fix that helped me get by until the repair was to use the physical key hidden in the fob when the handle got really stubborn. Keep us posted! Always good to share these experiences so others know what to look out for.

Thanks everyone for your input! Just wanted to close the loop on this, finally got my X4 checked at the workshop today. You were spot on about the door handle unit! They found the same issue with the electronic module in the driver's side handle. The mechanic mentioned exactly what you said about these problems being more common in newer models. Got the handle unit replaced and they did that system reset you recommended. Total bill came to about 520 Euro, bit more than I hoped for, but at least everything's working perfectly now. No more steering lock issues, error messages are gone, and the car starts like a charm. Really appreciate all the advice, especially about using the physical key as a temporary fix, that saved me from getting stranded a couple of times before the repair. Guess these high-tech features are great when they work, but can be a real pain when they don't! Thanks again for helping me figure this out. Hopefully this thread helps someone else dealing with the same problem!

Hi there! I can relate as I had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW X3 last summer. I'd say I have some experience working with cars, but I'm not a pro mechanic. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I faced. My door handle electronics were acting up, causing issues with the car's access system and those annoying error messages. Took it to my trusted workshop, and they diagnosed a faulty electronic module in the door handle. The repair included replacing the complete handle unit with a new one. Cost me around 480 Euro, but it fixed everything, no more starting issues or steering lock problems since then. Before I can give more specific advice, could you share: Which engine variant do you have? Are all door handles responding normally to your key fob? Does this happen only with the driver's door?
