BMW X5 Dies out of nowhere, ECU Troubles or Something Else?

Hi everyone! Need advice on my 2002 BMW X5 (gas engine, 146k km). My car's been acting strange lately, taking forever to start up, running with less power, and out of nowhere shutting down systems. Got some error codes stored too. I suspect it might be a faulty ECU, but my last mechanic experience wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X5? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Looking for recommendations on dealing with this, don't want to get ripped off again. Thanks in advance!

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting my relay replaced just as I mentioned before, my X3 has been running like a charm. The total bill came to 120 € for the repair, and honestly, it was worth every penny. The mechanic did spot a faulty ECU during the diagnostics though, which they fixed at the same time. Since getting both issues sorted, I haven't had a single electrical problem, no more slow starts, no power loss, nothing! It's been great. The car starts up instantly now, and all systems work perfectly. Such a relief not having to worry about getting stranded anymore. Funny enough, my mechanic said these electrical gremlins are pretty common in BMWs of our era. The key is catching them early before they cause bigger problems. Thanks so much for all this info! You'll be glad to know I took your advice and finally got my X5 checked out. Turns out it wasn't just the relay, had a few other electrical gremlins hiding in there too. The mechanic I found was actually great, really took the time to explain everything. Got the relay replaced, plus they fixed some corroded wiring that was causing those unusual shutdowns. Bill came to a bit more than yours at around 300 bucks, but honestly, the car runs better than it has in years. No more slow starts or power issues! Funny thing, while they were working on it, the mechanic showed me how the old relay was literally falling apart inside. Can't believe I was driving around like that! Should've gotten it checked sooner instead of worrying about getting ripped off. Really appreciate you steering me in the right direction. Saved me from what could've been a much bigger headache (and bill) down the road. Time to enjoy my properly working BMW again!
