BMW X5 Door Sensor Chaos: Locks & Warnings Gone Haywire

Hi everyone! Having troubles with my 2009 BMW X5 (petrol, 80,661km). The door system is acting up, getting error messages about doors not being closed, can't lock/unlock properly, and the auto-lock while driving stopped working. I think it might be the door contact sensor playing up. Anyone dealt with something similar? What was your experience with fixing it and how much did it cost? Last mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm looking for honest feedback before taking it in. Thanks for any help!

I had a similar issue with my 2012 BMW X3 last year. The door locking system was going crazy, showing unusual door-open warnings even when everything was shut tight. Took it to the garage and turned out it was a faulty wiring harness in the driver's door, the cables had worn out from constant opening and closing. They had to replace the entire door wiring harness and recalibrate the central locking system. It wasn't a major mechanical issue, but it needed immediate attention because faulty door locks are a safety concern. The fix wasn't too complicated for the mechanics, took about half a day's work. The door sensors are part of the car's security system, so when they start acting up, it affects the whole central locking mechanism. Since getting it fixed, everything's been working perfectly, auto-lock, central locking, and all door sensors are back to normal. My advice? Get it checked soon. These electrical gremlins tend to get worse if left unattended, and you don't want to end up stranded with doors that won't lock or unlock properly.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with! Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also curious if you've had any other door-related issues pop up since then? I'm trying to budget for this repair and want to make sure I'm prepared for any potential follow-up problems.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. Just wanted to let you know that after getting it fixed, it cost me 95€ for the repair, basically there was a dodgy cable connection that needed sorting out. The mechanic found the faulty door contact signal and fixed it right up. Since the repair, my X3's been running like a charm, no more unusual door warnings or locking issues. I was actually pretty relieved it wasn't something more serious (and expensive!). The central locking's working perfectly now, and I haven't had a single door-related problem pop up since. To be honest, I was worried it might be something major when it first happened, but it turned out to be a relatively straightforward fix. I'd definitely say go ahead and get yours checked out, better to sort it now than wait for it to potentially get worse. The peace of mind is worth it, knowing everything's working as it should. Let me know how you get on with yours, always interested to hear if others have similar experiences with their BMWs!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You were right about getting it checked out quickly. Turns out my issue was also electrical, a worn-out wiring harness, but in my case, it was in the passenger door. Cost me a bit more than yours at 150€, probably because they had to replace a few extra components. The mechanic was actually really good this time. He showed me the damaged wiring and explained everything clearly. Took about 4 hours to fix, but my car's working perfectly now, no more unusual warnings, and the central locking system is back to normal. Such a relief! It's funny how these things stress us out at first, but end up being manageable fixes. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the push I needed to get it sorted before it got worse. At least now I can lock my car without wondering if it'll actually work!
