BMW X5 Key Fob Dead? Remote Start & Lock Issues Fixed

Hey everyone! Having some worrying issues with my 2023 BMW X5 (gas engine, 170,867 km). The remote locking system isn't working right, and I need to use the physical key to start the engine now. Got some error codes stored too. I think it might be the bumper antenna, but I'm a bit hesitant about going back to the shop after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did repairs cost? Any recommendations for dealing with this? Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X3 last month. The key fob stopped communicating with the car, and I was stuck using the physical key. The diagnostic showed multiple error codes related to the key recognition system. Turned out it wasn't the bumper antenna, it was a faulty cable connection between the key reader module and the main control unit. The insulation had worn out, causing intermittent connection issues. Not a serious problem, but definitely annoying and needed fixing to prevent further complications. The repair involved replacing the wiring harness and reprogramming the key recognition system. Took about 3 hours at the shop. My mechanic mentioned this is fairly common with these models once they get some miles on them. If you're worried about shop quality, look for a certified BMW specialist, they'll have the right diagnostic tools for these electronic issues. It's worth getting it checked soon before it potentially affects other systems.

Hey thanks for sharing your experience! This really helps. Funny how similar our issues were. Glad to hear it was just the wiring harness and not something more serious. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other quirks?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. Since I had it fixed, everything's been working like a charm, no more key fob drama! The remote locking is spot-on, and I haven't had to use the physical key since. The total bill came to 95 € for fixing the cable connection issue. Honestly, it was worth every penny just to get rid of that hassle. Turns out it was exactly what I suspected, the bumper antenna connection was acting up. The mechanic sorted it pretty quickly once they identified the problem. Haven't noticed any other quirks or issues since the repair. The car's running just as smoothly as it did when I first got it. If you're dealing with the same problem, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out sooner rather than later. These electronic gremlins can be a pain, but they're usually pretty straightforward to fix once you get them to the right mechanic. Let me know if you need any other info about the repair. Always happy to help a fellow BMW owner!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! I actually went ahead and got it fixed yesterday. You were right about getting it done sooner rather than later. My issue turned out to be different though, the key fob receiver unit needed replacing completely. Wasn't too thrilled about the cost (came to about 350€), but at least it's sorted now. The mechanic I found was really professional and got it done in just a couple of hours. The best part? No more juggling with the physical key or dealing with those annoying error messages. The remote features are all working perfectly again. Feels good to have the car back to normal. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out, definitely made the right call there! Guess I worried too much about going to the shop. Sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and get things fixed properly.
