BMW X5 Rough Idle: Mounts or Something More Serious?

Hi all! Need advice on my 2018 BMW X5 (gas engine, 154k km). Recently noticed increased vibrations throughout the car and rough idling. Scanner shows an error code. I suspect it's the engine mounts, but after a previous bad experience with a mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X5? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences. Thanks!

Hey there! I had identical symptoms on my 2015 BMW X3 last year, rough idle and those annoying vibrations throughout. Initially thought it was engine mounts too, but turned out to be a bad ignition coil and spark plug connection. The scanner threw similar codes. When I took it to the garage, they found two coils were failing and the plug connections were corroded. It wasn't a major repair job, but leaving it unfixed could have led to more serious engine problems. They replaced all coils and plugs to prevent future issues. If your symptoms match what I described, I'd suggest getting it checked soon. The fix sorted out all vibration issues and the engine runs smooth now. Make sure to go to someone who specializes in BMWs, they'll know exactly what to look for with these common issues. Hope this helps with your decision. Best regards

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Would you mind letting me know roughly how much you ended up paying for the coils and plugs replacement? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed? Just want to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if the fix was long-lasting.

Hey again! Great to hear back from you! Just wanted to update you on my X3 situation. After getting it properly checked out, it turned out I was a bit off in my initial diagnosis, while there were some coil issues, the main culprit was actually a defective engine mount that was causing those vibrations. The mechanic spotted it right away. The repair went really well and I'm happy to report my car's running smooth as silk now, no more shakes or weird vibrations! The engine mount fix was the game-changer. The total bill came to 95€ for sorting out a faulty cable/plug connection that was part of the problem too. Since the repair about 8 months ago, I haven't had a single issue pop up. Car's performing like a champ! My advice would be to get yours checked sooner rather than later, these things tend to get worse (and more expensive) if you leave them too long. Let me know how it goes with your X5! Always happy to share more details about my experience if you need them. Cheers!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from a reputable mechanic today. Turns out my situation was pretty different from yours. The vibration was coming from a worn-out timing chain tensioner, not the engine mounts like I initially suspected. The repair was more expensive than I expected, set me back about 800 bucks, but at least the issue is fixed now. The mechanic also spotted and fixed a minor oil leak while they were at it, which was a bonus. After driving it home, I can definitely tell the difference. The car runs super smooth now, no more weird vibrations or rough idling. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it checked out. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it gave me the push I needed to take it to a professional. Even though our issues turned out to be different, getting expert help was definitely the right call. Will update the group if anything else comes up! Best wishes!
