Thanks for the detailed response! My X5 just hit 161950 KM and had its latest service two weeks ago. Mine's acting up on the driver's side, and yeah, there's a warning light on the dash. It makes this weird clicking sound when I open the door, like it's trying to work but just can't. Really helpful to know about your repair costs, though I'm hoping mine might be something simpler. Been pretty religious with maintenance on this car, but these luxury features sometimes have a mind of their own! Did your mechanic mention anything about potential DIY fixes, or is this strictly a dealer/professional job?

Hey again! Good to hear back from you. Wow, that clicking sound you're describing is exactly what mine was doing! When you mentioned the noise and the warning light, it's bringing back memories of my X3's issues. The symptoms are identical to what I experienced. About DIY fixes, I actually asked my mechanic the same thing because I like tinkering with my car when possible. But he strongly advised against it. These belt handover systems are pretty complex with their motors and electronics, and getting it wrong could potentially mess with the safety systems. Plus, the calibration after installation needs special diagnostic equipment. In my case, the clicking was definitely the motor trying but failing to engage. Since your mileage is similar to what mine was (mine was around 155,000 KM when it failed), I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same issue. These systems tend to wear out around this mileage. One thing I learned during my repair, there's actually no real temporary fix or workaround. Once these systems start failing, they need proper attention. The good news is that once it's fixed, it should work perfectly for many years to come. Mine's been flawless since the repair last year. Let me know what you decide to do. I'm curious if you end up having the same root cause as mine did!

Thanks so much for all this info! It's both relieving and concerning to hear that your experience matches mine so closely. Definitely not thrilled about the repair costs, but safety comes first, right? I think I'll bite the bullet and take it to my regular BMW specialist next week. The clicking sound is starting to drive me crazy anyway, and I'd rather get it fixed properly than risk any safety issues. Really appreciate you mentioning that bit about the special diagnostic equipment, saves me from attempting a DIY job and potentially making things worse! Will update once I get it looked at. Hoping the damage to my wallet won't be too severe, but at least I know what I'm potentially in for. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, it's super helpful having someone who's been through the same thing!

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars and had a similar issue on my 2013 BMW X3 last year (I also considered the 5 series back then). The belt handover system completely failed on the driver's side. Super annoying! Took it to my regular workshop and they diagnosed it as a faulty belt bringer motor/mechanism. The entire repair, including parts and labor, cost me around 455 Euro. They had to replace the complete handover unit, wasn't fun for my wallet but at least it's working perfectly now. Before I can give you more specific advice though, could you share: Which side is affected (driver/passenger)? Are you getting any warning lights on the dash? Does the mechanism make any noise when trying to work? Let me know these details and I can share more about what to expect with the repair.
