BMW X6 Fuel System Issues: Stalling and Starting Troubles

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2010 BMW X6 (gas, 127,669 km) and need some advice. My car's been acting up lately, won't start sometimes, stalls when idling, and runs pretty rough. Check engine light is on, and I'm burning through fuel faster than usual. Mechanic's diagnostic showed some error codes, and I'm suspecting it might be the fuel pump. Had a sketchy experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms, especially with the X6? How much did the repair cost you, and can you recommend what to look out for? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The 2010 BMW X6 is experiencing starting issues, stalling when idling, and increased fuel consumption, with the check engine light on. These symptoms could be due to a faulty fuel pump, ignition coil issues, or clogged fuel components. Solutions include checking the fuel pump connections, inspecting ignition coils and spark plugs, and cleaning or replacing the fuel filter and injectors. Consulting a BMW specialist for a thorough diagnostic is recommended to avoid unnecessary repairs and costs.

Hey there! Had a similar situation with my 2013 BMW X5 35i last month. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, rough idle, stalling, and increased fuel consumption. Initially thought it was the fuel pump too, but it turned out to be a failing ignition coil and worn spark plugs. The diagnostic showed multiple misfires. My previous mechanic missed this completely, but my current one spotted the issue right away. Had to replace two ignition coils and all spark plugs. It wasn't a major repair in terms of complexity, but definitely not something you want to leave unchecked as it can damage your catalytic converter in the long run. Key thing is finding a mechanic who specializes in BMWs. They'll know these common issues and won't just throw parts at the problem. Make sure they do a proper diagnostic before replacing the fuel pump, could save you from unnecessary repairs. Best of luck!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I'm having almost exactly the same problems with my X6 right now. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for those ignition coils and spark plugs? And has everything been running smoothly since the fix? Just trying to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and whether it really solved all the issues. Cheers!

Hey again! Actually, my situation turned out differently from what I initially thought. While I mentioned the ignition coils before, I ended up taking it to a BMW specialist who found it was indeed the fuel pump, specifically a faulty connection in its wiring. Got it fixed last week for just 95 €, way less than I was worried about! Just needed to repair the cable connection, not replace the whole pump. Car's running like a dream now, no more stalling, starts right up every time, and my fuel consumption is back to normal. Such a relief it wasn't something more serious (and expensive)! If your symptoms are similar to what I had, definitely get them to check the fuel pump connections first before replacing any major parts. Really glad I went with a specialist this time, sometimes the simple fix is all you need. Let me know how it goes with yours!

Thanks for the update! Actually just got back from the mechanic today and what a rollercoaster it turned out to be. Took your advice and found a BMW specialist, good call on that one! Initially went in thinking it'd be super expensive, but turns out my issue was different. Had a clogged fuel filter and some dirty fuel injectors. Mechanic did a thorough cleaning and replaced the filter. All in all, cost me around 200 bucks, way less than I was dreading! Been driving it for a few hours now and it's running perfectly, no more stalling, starts right up, and that rough idle is completely gone. Such a relief! The mechanic also showed me what to watch out for in the future, which was super helpful. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me avoid panicking about potentially huge repair costs. Sometimes it's the simple things that make all the difference! Thanks again for all your help!
