BMW X6 Steering Controls Dead: Airbag Warning Alert

Hey everyone! Having some serious issues with my 2017 BMW X6 (gas, 132k km). The steering wheel buttons completely stopped working, and now I'm getting warnings about failed assistance systems and airbag malfunction. The error codes are stored in the system. Last time I dealt with my mechanic, things didn't go so well, so I'm a bit hesitant. Has anyone experienced similar problems with their X6's multifunction steering wheel? Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations for fixing this issue. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW X5 35i last year. The steering wheel controls died suddenly, and I got those same warning lights for the assistance systems and airbag. What I found out at the garage was that the clock spring (spiral cable) in the steering wheel had failed. It's basically a cable that maintains electrical connections between the steering wheel and the car's main electrical system while allowing the wheel to turn. This isn't something you want to ignore, it's actually pretty serious since it affects your airbag system. My mechanic said leaving it unfixed could potentially prevent the airbag from deploying in an accident. The repair itself wasn't too complex, but it needed proper diagnostic equipment and BMW-specific knowledge. The fix took about 2-3 hours at the shop. Just make sure you get it done at a place that really knows BMWs, they'll need to properly code the new unit to your car's systems. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I had the same issue fixed on my X6 about 8 months ago. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the clock spring replacement? Also, has everything been working properly since the repair? I'm asking because I want to get an idea of costs and make sure it's a long-term fix before I commit to getting it done.

Hey again! Happy to help! Since you asked, after getting it fixed, my multifunction steering wheel has been working flawlessly. The mechanic found a faulty cable connection in the steering wheel, and once that was sorted out, all the warning lights disappeared. The total bill came to 95 € for the repair, which included fixing the cable connection. I know you mentioned having doubts about your mechanic, but this really isn't something you want to put off dealing with, especially considering the airbag system is involved. For the safety aspect alone, it's worth getting it sorted properly. I can totally understand wanting to know about long-term reliability, it's been over a year now since my repair and I haven't had a single issue with any of the steering wheel functions or those warning lights. The assistance systems are all working perfectly too. Let me know if you need any other info about the repair! Always happy to share my experience.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! I bit the bullet and took my X6 to a different mechanic yesterday. Turns out it was indeed the clock spring, just like in your case. The repair cost was a bit higher than yours, around 150 € with parts and labor, but honestly, I'm just relieved it's fixed. The whole process was much smoother than my previous mechanic experiences. They diagnosed it quickly, replaced the part, and reset all the warning lights. Took my car for a test drive afterward, and everything's working perfectly now, all the steering wheel controls, assistance systems, and no more annoying warning lights! Really appreciate everyone's input here. It gave me the confidence to get it sorted instead of putting it off. It's such a relief to have everything working properly again, especially knowing the safety systems are back to normal. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the right decision!
