BMW X6 Tailgate Won't Open, Hall Sensor Issue?

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X6 (29879 KM since new) just had its service last month, and everything else seems fine except this tailgate issue. It does make a clicking sound when I try to open it, and I get a "Tailgate malfunction" message on the iDrive screen. Interesting what you mentioned about the wiring harness, that could definitely be it since the problem seems intermittent. Sometimes it works fine for a few tries, then acts up again. I'll have my mechanic check the wiring connections first before replacing any parts. Any chance you remember how long the repair took? Just trying to plan ahead.

Hey again! Glad I could help out earlier. Yeah, that clicking sound you're describing sounds very familiar, mine did exactly the same thing before I got it fixed. The intermittent nature of the problem is also exactly what I experienced. These symptoms are classic signs of wiring issues. Since your X6 has relatively low mileage compared to what mine had when the problem occurred (mine was around 98000 KM), I'd definitely get those wiring connections checked first. The repair on my X5 took about 2-3 hours total. My mechanic spent quite a bit of time diagnosing and tracing the wiring path to find the exact spot where the connection was faulty. Just a heads up, while they're in there checking the wiring, have them look at the rubber grommet where the wires pass through from the body to the tailgate. On these BMWs, this area can get stressed from the constant opening and closing, which sometimes leads to wire damage. That's actually where my issue was centered. Let me know how it goes! I'm curious if it turns out to be the same problem. These tailgate issues can be annoying, but at least they're usually fixable without major parts replacement.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's really helpful about the rubber grommet, I'll definitely mention that specifically to my mechanic. I've just booked it in for next week, and they've blocked out 3 hours as you suggested. It's actually a relief to hear that your issue was fixed without needing major parts replacement. I was worried I'd need to replace the whole motor assembly or something expensive like that. The clicking sound being similar to what you experienced makes me pretty confident it's likely the same wiring problem. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted out, might help others with similar issues. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. It's exactly the kind of real-world feedback I was hoping for when I posted this question!

Hey there! I have some experience with BMWs and went through a similar issue with my 2011 BMW X5 last year. When my tailgate started acting up, I first tried the basic stuff like checking the fuse, but no luck. Took it to my regular workshop, and it turned out to be a loose connection in the wiring harness going to the tailgate sensor. The cables had gotten worn over time and weren't making proper contact. The mechanic had to replace some wiring and reconnect everything properly, cost me about 95 Euro for the fix. Would you mind sharing if you're getting any specific warning messages on your dashboard? Also, does your tailgate make any unusual sounds when trying to operate it? This could help pinpoint if you're dealing with the same issue I had or something else. By the way, if you're comfortable with it, have your mechanic check the X6's tailgate motor connections too, they can sometimes cause similar symptoms.
