BMW X7 Oil Pressure Alert: Owner Seeks Urgent Help
Summary of the thread

Thanks for sharing your experience! That definitely sounds like what I'm dealing with. Can't remember if you mentioned how much it set you back for the oil pump replacement? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed? My X7 is my daily driver, so I want to make sure I'm not going to run into more problems down the road.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up about the costs, I paid 755 € for the complete oil pump replacement and repair work. It was worth every penny though, as the car's been running like a dream since then! Haven't had a single oil pressure warning or weird engine noise in the past months. I completely understand your concern about reliability since it's your daily driver. But honestly, after getting the defective oil pump sorted out, I haven't had any related issues at all. The engine runs super smooth now, and all those scary warning messages are gone for good. Just make sure you get it fixed sooner rather than later, that's what I learned from my experience. Those oil pressure problems aren't something you want to mess around with. But once it's properly repaired, you should be good to go! Let me know if you need any other details about the repair. Always happy to help out a fellow BMW owner!

Thanks everyone! Just wanted to update you on what happened. Finally took my X7 to a different mechanic last week. Turned out you were right about the oil pump, it was acting up and needed replacement. The whole thing cost me about 800 bucks, which wasn't as bad as I expected. The funny part was when I brought it in. The mechanic took one listen to that knocking sound and knew exactly what was wrong. He showed me the old pump after replacing it, thing was definitely on its last legs! The repair took a bit longer than planned because they had to order some special parts, but honestly, it was worth the wait. Car's running like new now, no more warning lights or scary noises. Such a relief! Really appreciate everyone's input, especially about not waiting too long to get it fixed. You guys saved me from what could've been a much bigger headache. Guess I'll be sticking with this mechanic from now on, he really knew his stuff!

I had a very similar issue with my 2019 BMW X5 40i last year. The oil pressure warning kept popping up along with that distinctive knocking sound. Initially, I also got the runaround from a mechanic, but when I finally got it properly diagnosed, it turned out to be a defective oil pump. The symptoms were identical to what you're describing, pressure warnings, engine noise, and the control error message. In my case, the pump wasn't maintaining consistent oil pressure, which was pretty serious since it could've led to complete engine failure if left unchecked. The repair involved replacing the entire oil pump assembly and cleaning out the oil passages. The job took about two days at the shop. It's definitely not something you want to postpone, proper oil pressure is crucial for engine longevity. Since this sounds exactly like what I dealt with, I'd suggest getting it checked specifically for oil pump issues. Given that your X7 is newer, it should still be under warranty, so I'd strongly recommend taking it to a BMW dealer for this one.
