BMW XM Engine Problems: Stalling and Power Loss Issues

Hey everyone, having some serious trouble with my 2022 BMW XM. Engine light is on, car's struggling to maintain idle speed, sometimes stalling completely. Also noticed sluggish acceleration and reduced power. I suspect it might be the rail pressure sensor, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Particularly interested in hearing what repairs were needed and how your workshop handled it. Any insights would be really helpful.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X7. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through last year, engine light, rough idle, and that annoying power loss. My workshop diagnosed it as a faulty pressure sensor, and they got it sorted pretty quickly. Cost me around 240 Euro for the fix, including parts and labor. Honestly, it was worth every penny because the car runs like new now. I had first tried cleaning the sensor connections, but that didn't help. The workshop confirmed it needed a complete sensor replacement. During the repair, they also checked the entire fuel system just to be safe. Before I can offer more specific advice, could you share: How many miles/kilometers are on your XM? Did these symptoms appear suddenly or gradually? Are you getting any specific error codes?

Hey, appreciate the detailed response! I'm at 112920 KM and just had my service done recently. In my case, the symptoms started appearing gradually over the past week or so. Interesting that you had a similar experience with the pressure sensor. I actually managed to get the error code read, it's showing P0087. Did you notice any fuel consumption changes when you had this issue? Mine seems to be drinking more fuel than usual, which I guess makes sense if the pressure isn't right. Really hoping it won't cost me too much more than what you paid, though with these newer models, you never know!

Hey again! Yeah, with the P0087 code and those symptoms, it's definitely similar to what I experienced with my X7. When I had the issue, I definitely noticed increased fuel consumption, I was getting about 15-20% worse mileage than usual. It's because when the rail pressure sensor isn't working correctly, the engine management system can't optimize the fuel delivery properly. You're at similar mileage to when mine started acting up (I was around 108000 KM). The gradual onset is also typical, mine started with just occasional rough idles, then got progressively worse over about two weeks. Quick tip though, since you mentioned you just had service done, might be worth checking if they disturbed anything around the sensor area during the service. Sometimes these issues can pop up right after routine maintenance if something wasn't reconnected properly. In my case, they found some debris in the connector when they replaced the sensor. The price I quoted earlier might be a bit optimistic for the XM since it's a newer model. Mine ended up being covered under extended warranty, but I'd prepare for potentially higher costs. Maybe check if you're still under warranty? These newer BMWs can be pricey to fix, but at least once it's sorted, it should run perfectly again. Keep me posted on what you find out!

Thanks for all that info! Really helpful, especially about the potential service connection, I'll definitely bring that up with my workshop. Just called them and got an appointment for tomorrow morning. You're right about the warranty thing too, I checked and thankfully I'm still covered! Such a relief since, as you mentioned, these repairs can get pretty expensive on newer models. I've been monitoring the fuel consumption more closely since your last message, and you're spot on, I'm definitely seeing that 15-20% increase you mentioned. Good to know this matches your experience. It's actually making me feel better about the whole situation knowing someone else has dealt with the same thing successfully. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted just in case anyone else runs into similar issues with their XM. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's made this whole situation much less stressful!
