BMW XM Oil Pressure & Speedo Warning Lights Mystery

Hey there! My 2023 BMW XM is showing oil pressure warning and speedometer warning lights simultaneously. Suspect it might be related to contaminated engine oil. Has anyone dealt with similar warning combinations? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it resolved? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and repair solutions.

Summary of the thread

A 2023 BMW XM is displaying simultaneous oil pressure and speedometer warning lights. Initially suspected to be due to contaminated engine oil, the issue may instead be related to faulty sensors, as a similar case with a BMW X6 was resolved by replacing a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor. The recommended course of action is to have the sensors checked and possibly replaced, as this resolved the warning lights in a previous instance.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey! I had something similar with my 2021 BMW X6 (also own an X5). I've got some experience working on cars, though I'm no expert. Those warning lights showed up on mine too, and it turned out I was way overdue for an oil change. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found the oil was really degraded and dirty, affecting the sensors. They did a full oil change, replaced the filter, and reset the warning system. Cost me around 165 Euro, but totally worth it to prevent any serious engine damage. What's your current mileage, and when was your last oil change? Knowing these details would help figure out if you're dealing with the same issue.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I just checked, and my odometer's at 58931 KM. Actually had my last service only 3 weeks ago, so I'm really surprised to see these warnings pop up now. Makes me think it might be something else than just old oil. Did they mention anything about sensor malfunctions when you got yours fixed? Starting to wonder if I should get the sensors checked separately before jumping straight to an oil change.

Hey there again! That's actually really interesting because you mentioned having service just 3 weeks ago. In my case with the X6, I initially thought it was just the oil too, but after reading your update, this sounds different from what I experienced. After my initial reply to you, I actually remembered something I didn't mention before. A few months after that first oil change issue, I had a similar warning combination pop up again, but this time it turned out to be a faulty oil pressure sensor. The mechanics initially missed it because they were so focused on the oil quality. Given that you've just had service done, I'd definitely get those sensors checked. On these newer BMWs, particularly the XM and X6 models, the sensors can sometimes act up. Mine cost about 280 Euro to fix when it was the sensor, but it was totally worth it for the peace of mind. The sensor replacement took care of both warning lights immediately. Definitely recommend getting it looked at soon though, even if it's just a sensor issue, better to be safe than sorry with these high-performance engines. Let me know what you find out!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! This sensor issue you mentioned makes a lot more sense given my situation. I've just called my mechanic and booked the car in for tomorrow morning, specifically mentioned the sensor possibility you brought up. Actually feeling quite relieved it might just be a sensor thing rather than a major engine problem. My gut was telling me something wasn't adding up with these warnings appearing right after a service, and your experience with the faulty sensor really helps explain it. Will definitely make sure they do a thorough check of both the oil pressure and speed sensors. The price you mentioned for the sensor replacement seems reasonable too, helps me know what to expect cost-wise. Really appreciate you taking the time to share both your experiences. I'll update the thread once I get it checked out tomorrow. Hopefully it'll be a straightforward fix like yours was!
