BMW Z3's ABS Light Signals Traction Control Emergency

Need advice: BMW Z3 (2002) ABS issues and traction problems Hey everyone, my Z3 has been acting up lately and I'm hesitant to go back to my mechanic after a previous bad experience. The ABS warning light is on, and the car's having serious traction control issues, jerking during acceleration even on dry roads. There's definitely something wrong with the ABS system. I suspect it might be a speed sensor problem, but I'm not sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their Z3? It's a 2002 model with 172,813 km on the clock, running on gas. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and recommended repair shops. Thanks in advance for any help!

I had similar issues with my BMW Z4 (2004) last month. The symptoms matched yours exactly, ABS light, traction problems, and jerking during acceleration. Turned out the ABS control module was failing, not just a speed sensor. After a thorough diagnostic scan, the technician found multiple faults in the ABS unit. The control module had internal damage from moisture over time, which is actually quite common in these models. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention since it affected both the ABS and stability control systems. The repair required a complete ABS module replacement and recoding of the new unit to sync with the car's systems. I couldn't risk driving with faulty ABS, so I had it fixed right away. The car runs perfectly now, no warning lights, smooth acceleration, and proper traction control. My advice? Get it checked soon. Faulty ABS isn't something you want to gamble with, regardless of road conditions.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That really helps as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. It's good to know the ABS module was the culprit in your case rather than just a sensor. Would you mind telling me what the damage to your wallet was for the full repair? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since the fix? Want to make sure I budget properly and know what to expect.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update on my Z4 situation. The repair job was done last week, and I'm relieved to say the Speed signal fault has been completely resolved. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed the control unit that was defective, just as I suspected from those symptoms we discussed. The whole thing set me back 1000 €, not cheap, but totally worth it for the peace of mind. Since the repair, my Z4's running like a dream, no warning lights, perfect traction, and the jerking during acceleration is completely gone. Haven't had a single problem with the ABS or stability systems. The car feels solid and safe again, just like when I first got it. Between you and me, even though the bill was steep, I'm just glad to have my car back in proper working order. These BMWs can be pricey to fix, but when you get the right mechanic on the job, it's worth every penny. I'd definitely recommend getting yours sorted soon, you really don't want to mess around with faulty ABS systems. Have you scheduled an appointment yet to get yours checked out?

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! After reading your experience, I bit the bullet and took my Z3 to a new mechanic yesterday. You were spot on, it was the ABS control module that needed replacing. The mechanic was actually great, totally different from my last experience. He took the time to show me the corroded unit and explained everything clearly. The repair cost was similar to what you paid, around 950€. Honestly, seeing the old damaged part made me realize how lucky I was nothing serious happened while driving. The car feels completely different now, in a good way! No more warning lights, and the handling is back to how it should be. That jerking during acceleration is gone too. Can't believe I waited this long to get it fixed. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out. Sometimes you just need that extra nudge to make the right decision. Now I can finally enjoy driving my Z3 again without worrying about the ABS acting up!
