Thanks for the detailed response! Just had my service last month at 118,261 KM. The issue does get worse over bumps, and it's the original BMW audio system. I tried your suggestion about setting the bass to zero, but the other speakers are still acting up periodically. It seems to happen regardless of weather conditions. I'm thinking it might be a wiring issue since the whole system is affected. Did you or anyone else have experience with wiring problems in these older models? I'm hoping to avoid replacing the entire system if possible.

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your Z3. You know, after reading about your symptoms and comparing them to what I experienced with my Z4, I'm now pretty convinced it's more than just a speaker issue like I had initially thought. Those symptoms you're describing, especially the way it acts up over bumps and affects all speakers, really points to a wiring problem. In my Z4, after fixing that initial bass speaker issue, I actually ran into a similar situation about a year later. Turned out there was a loose connection in the main wiring harness that connects the head unit to the amp. The repair shop found several corroded wires in the harness, probably from years of heat and vibration. Theyaged to repair the wiring without replacing the whole system, which saved me quite a bit of money. Cost me about 180 Euro for the wiring repair, way cheaper than a full system replacement. Given your car's mileage and age, I'd bet you're dealing with something similar. These older BMWs are known for their wiring getting finicky over time. I'd suggest having a professional audio shop check the wiring connections first before replacing any components. They should be able to trace the issue with their diagnostic tools. Let me know what you find out, I'm curious to know if it's the same issue I had!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the wiring harness issue you encountered. It makes total sense, especially given how you described the repair process and costs. I've actually just booked an appointment with a specialized car audio shop for next week. I feel much more confident now going in with this information about the potential wiring problems, at least I won't feel completely in the dark when they start diagnosing it. What a relief to hear it might not need a complete system replacement! The price you mentioned for the wiring repair sounds way more manageable than what I was dreading. I'll definitely keep you posted about what they find. Really appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed insights about your similar experience. Fingers crossed it's just some corroded wires that need fixing!

Hey there! I have some experience working on car audio systems, and I dealt with a similar issue in my 2003 BMW Z4. When I had the crackling and cutting out problem, it turned out to be a faulty bass speaker in the trunk area. My local car audio workshop diagnosed it pretty quickly. They replaced the defective speaker and recalibrated the system, which cost me around 280 Euro. Everything's been working perfectly since then. It could be something similar in your case, but I'd need more info to be sure. Have you noticed if the problem gets worse when going over bumps? Does the issue happen more often when it's humid or rainy? Are you using the original BMW audio system or an aftermarket one? Also, if you want to test if it's just the subwoofer, try setting your bass levels to zero and see if the other speakers still act up. That might help narrow down the problem.
