BR V Belt Tensioner Defect
Summary of the thread
A 2019 Honda BR-V owner noticed that the automatic belt tension adjustment was not functioning, suspecting a defect in the belt tensioner. The issue could also potentially involve the idler pulley. A suggestion was made to inspect the belt tensioner for damage, such as cracks or excessive play, and to consider the timing belt's condition. Upon inspection by a mechanic, the belt tensioner was confirmed to be defective, leading to its replacement.

Thanks for the quick reply! When you say check the belt tensioner, what exactly am I looking for? Also, how would I know if the timing belt is the problem? Trying to avoid a costly repair bill if I can diagnose it myself first.

When I say check the tensioner, I mean visually inspect it for any signs of damage. Look for cracks, excessive play, or if it's seized up. If you're not sure about the timing belt, it might be best to take it to a workshop. A bad tensioner can wreck the timing belt; you don't want that kind of damage.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on. Turns out the belt tensioner was indeed defective, exactly as you described. The repair, including parts and labor, came out to 455€. Appreciate the help in narrowing it down!

I had a similar issue with my BR-V. Noticed some weird engine performance, and the belt squealed like crazy, especially on cold starts. Check the belt tensioner. It might be the culprit. Is the timing belt okay?
