Brake fluid level dropping ML problem
Summary of the thread
The brake fluid level in a 2014 Gasoline ML was dropping, potentially due to worn brake pads causing the caliper pistons to extend further and require more fluid. It was advised to check the brake pads and inspect for leaks in the brake lines. Immediate inspection by a mechanic was recommended to ensure safety, as low brake fluid and unusual pedal feedback could indicate serious issues. The problem was resolved by replacing the worn front brake pads and brake fluid, restoring normal brake function.

Thanks for the quick response. I haven't checked the brake pads myself yet. How quickly should I be looking to sort this? Is it still safe to drive short distances, or is it best to get it checked out immediately? Also, should I top up the brake fluid in the meantime?

Given the symptoms you described, I'd strongly advise against driving unless absolutely necessary. Low brake fluid combined with unusual brake pedal feel could indicate a significant issue affecting braking performance. Topping up the brake fluid might temporarily silence the warning light, but it won't address the underlying problem. I suggest you get the brake system inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. It could be something simple like worn pads, but it's crucial to rule out more serious problems with the brake lines or master cylinder. Better safe than sorry when it comes to brakes.

Thanks. I took your advice and booked it into a local workshop. Turns out you were spot on, the front brake pads were completely worn. Got all the pads and fluid replacement done, cost around 480€. Brakes feel normal again now.

I had a similar issue with my ML. If you are experiencing strange feedback from the brake pedal alongside the low brake fluid warning light, it's quite possible your brake pads are worn down. As the pads wear, the pistons in the calipers extend further, requiring more brake fluid. Have you checked the thickness of your brake pads lately? Also, inspect your brake lines for any signs of leaks, though worn pads are the more likely culprit.
