Bravo transmission slipping

Afternoon, I'm having a nasty issue with my 2007 Fiat Bravo, 1.4L petrol. It's got nearly 200,000 km on the clock. The car will often not start; CEL is illuminated; transmission is slipping; and there's a stored error pointing towards some sort of transaxle control unit malfunction, which I suspect concerns the parking position. Suspect a defective affected control unit. Has anyone dealt with similar weirdness? I really don't want to chuck parts at it blind.

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Fiat Bravo with nearly 200,000 km is experiencing starting issues, a check engine light, and transmission slipping, particularly between 2nd and 3rd gear. The problem is suspected to be related to a malfunctioning transaxle control unit, possibly affecting the parking position. A specialist confirmed a defective transmission control unit and internal damage, specifically with the parking pawl, requiring a complete transmission repair.

That sounds rough. Does the check engine light come on immediately or after you try to start it? When you say it slips, is it all gears or just some? And by slipping, do you mean like it's revving high but not moving, or more like harsh shifting?

The CEL illuminates as soon as I turn the ignition to the 'on' position, before even attempting to crank the engine. Regarding the slipping, it's most noticeable between 2nd and 3rd gear. And yes, revving high with sluggish engagement best describes the feeling. Could a dodgy neutral safety switch cause such erratic behavior?

Okay, CEL on ignition and slipping between 2nd and 3rd definitely points away from a simple switch issue. It's likely deeper in the TCU. The parking position fault code in the memory is the worrying factor here. I reckon a visit to someone with proper diagnostic gear is in order, might be internal damage. Brace yourself, though.

Thanks for the insight. I dropped it off at a specialist shop today. They've confirmed a defective transmission control unit and internal damage – the parking pawl isn't engaging correctly. Quoted 1000€ for a complete transmission repair. Ouch! Seems like you were spot on.
