C1 Diesel Smoke and Power Loss

I've got a 2006 Citroen C1 diesel that's acting up. A warning light is on, and the engine seems to have lost power. When I accelerate, there's smoke and a strong exhaust smell. I've checked fluid levels, but everything seems normal. Could it be the emission control system?

Sounds like a diesel particulate filter issue. The loss of power and smoke are typical. Has the car done a lot of short journeys recently? What's the mileage?

Yes, it's mainly used for short trips around town. The mileage is at 108987 km. Could it be the particulate filter itself or something else? What else could it be? Is there anything I can check myself?

Given the mileage and usage pattern, a blocked DPF is possible. However, with those symptoms and the age of the car, it's also worth checking the exhaust back pressure sensor. Low pressure readings can trigger those faults, but could also indicate a defective sensor. I'd recommend a workshop visit to diagnose the root cause.

I took it to a local garage, and it turned out to be the exhaust back pressure sensor, just as you suspected! They replaced it, and the total cost was 245€. The car is running smoothly again. Appreciate the help!
