C1 oil pressure warning lamp and engine noise

I'm having a worrying issue with my 2008 Citroen C1 diesel. The oil pressure warning lamp keeps lighting up, and there's a nasty loud mechanical noise coming from the engine. It's done 202165 km. I checked the oil level, and it's fine. Could it be the oil pump failing? I'm really worried it's something serious!

Sounds like it could be oil starvation. I had a similar issue with my old Fiat Punto, although it was a petrol engine. The oil light flickered, and I heard a strange knocking sound. Have you checked for any oil leaks? Also, what oil viscosity are you using?

Thanks for the reply! I haven't spotted any oil leaks, but I'll double-check. As for the oil viscosity, I honestly can't remember what the mechanic put in during the last service. Is it possible that using the wrong oil could cause these symptoms?

Definitely! Incorrect oil viscosity could contribute to low oil pressure, especially in an older engine. However, given the loud mechanical noises and the warning light, it's more likely to be the oil pump itself or potentially worn engine bearings. I'd strongly advise against driving it and get it checked by a workshop as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

Thanks, that's really helpful! I took it to a local garage and you were right, it was the oil pump. The total repair cost came to 755€ which includes the pump and labor. Good thing I didn't drive it anymore!
