C2 DPF and exhaust pressure issue
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Citroen C2 diesel experienced reduced engine power, a warning light, smoke during acceleration, and a strong exhaust smell, suspected to be related to the DPF and low exhaust pressure. The potential cause identified was a defective exhaust back pressure sensor, which could prevent the DPF regeneration process. After professional diagnosis, the sensor was confirmed faulty and replaced, resolving the issues.

I haven't attempted a forced regeneration. I wanted to rule out potential sensor issues first. 'Regeneration' refers to burning off the particulate matter, correct? If the sensor is faulty, could it provide incorrect readings that prevent regeneration?

Yes, regeneration is the process of burning off the soot. A faulty exhaust back pressure sensor can definitely prevent the regeneration cycle, as the ECU relies on its readings to determine when and how to perform it. Given the symptoms, it's worth having it checked professionally. It can be difficult to diagnose these things yourself.

Thanks, that confirms my suspicions. I took it to a workshop; the exhaust back pressure sensor was indeed defective. Replacement and labor cost 245€. The issues are resolved.

I had a similar problem with my C2's DPF. Low DPF pressure can indeed cause those symptoms. Have you tried forcing a DPF regeneration? It might clear the blockage if it's not too severe. Otherwise it could be the sensor as you mentioned. Does the problem occur often?
