C2 Electronic Parking Brake Failure

My 2003 Citroen C2 gasoline has a weird issue. The electronic parking brake just stopped working. The warning light is on, and I get an error message when I plug in a reader. Mileage is 79296 km. Seems like the motor in the brake caliper might be the problem. Has anyone had a similar issue?

Sounds like a pain! Electronic parking brakes can be tricky. When you say 'error message', what exactly does it say? Did this happen suddenly, or did you notice it getting weaker over time? It could also be a sensor issue, which would be cheaper than a new motor. Also, have you checked the brake fluid level? Sometimes a low level can trigger weird warnings.

The error message is something like 'Parking Brake Fault'. It happened suddenly, no warnings beforehand. About your 'sensor issue' theory, where exactly are those sensors located? And is there a way to test those myself? I'm trying to avoid a costly repair bill if possible!

Okay, 'Parking Brake Fault' is pretty generic, unfortunately. The sensors are usually integrated into the brake caliper itself, so testing them directly can be a pain without the right equipment. Given that it happened suddenly and you've got that error, and considering the age of your C2, it really does sound like the motor in the caliper has given up. I'd say take it to a workshop; they can diagnose it properly and confirm the faulty motor. Better safe than sorry when it comes to brakes!

I took it to the workshop, and you were right – it was the electric motor in the brake caliper. Cost me 505€ to get it fixed, ouch! But at least it's working again now. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
