C70 Check Engine Light and Fuel Consumption

I've got a 2006 Volvo C70 with a diesel engine and something weird is going on. The check engine light keeps popping up, and my fuel consumption has definitely gone up recently. I did some research and it seems like it could be related to the inlet VANOS mechanics. Is it possible that a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or a power supply issue could cause these symptoms? Anyone else experienced this?

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Volvo C70 is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, potentially linked to the inlet VANOS mechanics. Possible causes include a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or a power supply issue. A similar case suggested that low power and increased fuel consumption could be due to a faulty VANOS solenoid, possibly exacerbated by oil sludge. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle professionally checked, focusing on the VANOS solenoid and power supply.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my C70! Check engine light plus guzzling fuel. Could be the VANOS solenoid. Have you noticed any low power, especially when accelerating? Was the car regularly serviced, and the oil changed, or could there be oil sludge?

Interesting! Yes, there is definitely a drop in power when I try to accelerate quickly. Servicing was always on time, but could sludge really cause a VANOS issue? How did you figure out it was the solenoid?

Yep, low power and increased fuel consumption scream VANOS solenoid to me. Oil sludge can definitely muck things up. I didn't diagnose it myself, I took it to a workshop. They ran some tests and found that one of the inlet camshaft solenoid valves was faulty. Honestly, unless you're really comfortable with that kind of work, I'd recommend getting it checked by a professional. It's not a BMW VANOS, but they are delicate.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Sounds like a trip to the workshop is in order. I'll get them to check the VANOS solenoid and the power supply. Just got the quote for 250€, I will let you know if it solves the problem!
