C8 Diesel Power Loss and Smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Citroen C8 diesel is experiencing power loss, especially uphill, and emits excessive smoke during acceleration. These symptoms could be due to a faulty sensor or backpressure from a blockage, such as a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) issue. Although no warning lights are present, a professional diagnosis is recommended to test backpressure and determine if DPF cleaning or replacement is necessary.

No warning lights. I'm not sure how to force a cleaning cycle on my C8. Can I do that myself, or does it require special equipment? If it is the DPF, is replacement the only option, or are there diesel filter cleaning services?

Absence of a warning light doesn't rule out a DPF problem; it could be gradual degradation. Forced regeneration sometimes helps, but it often indicates an underlying issue. Given the symptoms, mileage, and no warning light, a professional diagnosis is best. A workshop should be able to test backpressure and advise if DPF cleaning is viable or replacement is necessary.

Thanks for the insights. I've booked it in at a local garage; the DPF was indeed defective. They quoted 1550€ for a replacement and fitting. Hopefully, that'll sort it out.

Reduced power and smoke likely points to a DPF issue. Has the DPF warning light illuminated? Have you tried a forced DPF cleaning cycle?
