C8 Gearbox Emergency Mode

I have a 2003 Citroen C8 diesel with the engine warning light on and error codes stored. The gearbox seems to be in emergency mode, with slippage, unclean shifting, and grinding noises sometimes. Mileage is 242150 km. I suspect the transmission oil temperature sensor. Any similar experiences?

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my C8. Is your gearbox going into limp mode too? Check your transmission fluid level first. A low level can cause the temp sensor to freak out. It's worth a shot before you dig deeper.

Could you elaborate on your experience? Did addressing the transmission fluid level resolve the issues you encountered, or were further interventions required? Also, did you receive similar error codes related to the transmission oil sensor?

For me, topping off the fluid helped temporarily, but the problem returned. Turned out the sensor was faulty and needed replacing. With those symptoms, I'd take it to a workshop. They have the tools to properly diagnose it.

Following your advice, I consulted a technician who confirmed the fault with the transmission oil temperature sensor. It also turned out the oil level was too low. Replacing the sensor and refilling the transmission oil completely resolved the symptoms. The total cost was 365€. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
