Cadillac Cruise Control & Speedometer System Failure Fix

Need help with cruise control issues on my 2004 Cadillac DeVille (192k km, gas engine). The speedometer shows an error message and cruise control stopped working completely. Car electronics check shows stored errors. Had some questionable repairs at my last mechanic visit, so looking for advice before going back. Has anyone experienced similar steering wheel control problems? Any suggestions on what could be causing these faulty system alerts and roughly what repairs might cost?

Working as a mechanic, I dealt with a similar issue on my 2007 Cadillac CTS. The cruise control failure combined with speedometer errors typically points to a faulty system connection between the steering wheel controls and the main control module. During diagnostics, we often find this stems from worn cable connections or a failing speed sensor actuator. The steering wheel control module can become non-functional due to corroded wiring harness connections, which is common in these models after extensive use. The repair process usually involves: Complete system diagnostics to pinpoint exact fault codes, Testing the steering wheel control module connections, Inspecting and possibly replacing the speed sensor actuator, Checking all related wiring harness connections This is generally a serious electrical issue that requires proper diagnostic equipment and expertise. Attempting DIY repairs on these systems can lead to additional complications with other electronic components. The stored error codes are crucial for accurate diagnosis. Before visiting a mechanic, make sure they have experience with Cadillac electrical systems, as generic scanning tools might not provide detailed enough information for proper troubleshooting.

Thanks for the detailed reply about the cruise control issues. I actually had this exact problem with my DeVille last year. The throttle body also needed cleaning during the repair, which helped resolve some related performance issues. Has anyone else needed additional repairs after fixing the initial cruise control problem? Mine has been working fine since the fix but wondering if I should watch for other car electronics issues. Also curious about the repair costs, would help to know what others paid for similar work. The steering wheel controls have been perfect since the repair, but Id like to know if anyone experienced repeat failures.

After fixing the cruise control issue on my CTS, I can confirm it was just a faulty connection in the steering wheel control module. The repair cost was 95€ for replacing the damaged cable connection. The non-functional cruise control system started working flawlessly after addressing this specific component. I have not experienced any repeat failures since the repair. The mechanic found the issue by checking the fuse box and tracing the wiring path to locate the exact point of disconnection. This kind of electrical repair typically resolves the problem permanently when done correctly. While throttle body cleaning can be related, in my case, the faulty system was isolated to just the control module connection. Regular electrical system checks can prevent similar issues from developing. The cruise control has remained reliable for over a year now with no additional problems showing up in other car electronics. Getting the correct diagnosis was key, dont let shops upsell unnecessary repairs when dealing with steering wheel control issues. A proper inspection should quickly reveal if its just a connection problem like mine was.

After getting input from everyone, I finally took my DeVille to a certified mechanic last week. The diagnosis matched what most people suggested, it was mainly a wiring issue in the steering wheel control module. The mechanic found corroded connections that were causing the cruise control and speedometer problems. The total repair came to 280€, which included: Diagnostic testing, Replacing damaged wiring, Cleaning the throttle body, Updating the car electronics system The whole job took about 3 hours. The faulty system alerts disappeared immediately after the repair. My cruise control is now working perfectly, and the speedometer shows correct readings again. The actuator didnt need replacement, which saved some money. Really glad I asked here first, helped me understand the likely issues before going to the shop. The mechanic confirmed that catching these electrical problems early prevented more expensive repairs down the line. No more error messages since the fix.
