Cadillac STS Power Steering Failure & Wheel Shake Alert

Thanks for that detailed reply about the steering pump repair. My symptoms turned out very similar on my STS. Just had it fixed last month. The mechanic found the pressure hose was leaking and the electric steering sensor had failed. The wheel alignment was also way off which made the steering feel worse than it was. After replacing the faulty parts and a full system calibration, the steering is crisp again with no more warning lights. Can you share what the total repair cost was in your case? Mine ended up being significant but wondering how it compares. Also curious if youve had any other steering system issues pop up since the repair?

Just wanted to follow up on your cost question. In my case, the steering system issue turned out much simpler than initially expected. While I was concerned about potential steering rack problems, it was actually just a faulty cable connection near the power steering pump causing the warning light and symptoms. The total repair came to 95€, mainly for diagnosing and fixing the electrical connection. The steering system has worked flawlessly since the repair, with no hydraulic fluid leaks or pressure issues. The mechanic did a thorough check of the entire steering column and confirmed all other components were in good condition. Seems like your repair was more extensive with the pressure hose replacement and sensor work. Since my repair was just an electrical fix, the cost was likely much lower than yours. The key is that both our steering problems got properly diagnosed and fixed, preventing any potential damage to more expensive components like the steering rack.

Had to share my experience after getting it fixed. Brought it to a local mechanic who specializes in power steering systems. Total repair came to 780€, definitely not cheap but worth it for safe steering. The pressure hose replacement was 290€, electric steering sensor 340€, and labor plus alignment work made up the rest. The mechanic was thorough and showed me the worn parts. The old pressure hose was severely cracked and leaking fluid all over the steering pump. Getting it fixed before the pump failed completely saved me from an even bigger repair bill. Its been running great for about 6 weeks now. The steering feels tight and responsive again, no more shaking or heavy feel. The warning light hasnt come back either. While the cost stung, having a properly working steering system gives me peace of mind. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who just wanted to replace the entire steering rack without proper diagnosis.

Recently had a similar problem with a 2008 Cadillac CTS. The symptoms matched exactly, heavy steering, wheel shake, and power steering warning light. The steering pump was failing, causing inconsistent hydraulic fluid pressure in the system. The main issue was a damaged electrical connector at the pump, which triggered the warning light and affected proper function. The steering rack itself was fine, but the failing pump made the steering feel loose and heavy. This turned out to be a significant repair requiring: Full power steering pump replacement, New hydraulic fluid flush, Electrical harness repair at the steering pump connection, System pressure test The repair took two full days due to the complexity of accessing the steering pump in these models. While not the most expensive steering system repair, its definitely not a DIY job due to the need for specialized pressure testing equipment and proper bleeding of the hydraulic system. Based on your symptoms, would strongly recommend having the power steering pump and electrical connections checked first before assuming steering rack failure. The warning light often indicates an electrical or pump issue rather than mechanical steering column problems.
