Camry EGR Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Toyota Camry Hybrid with nearly 200,000 km is experiencing rough running, poor acceleration, excessive smoke, high fuel consumption, jerking, and a hissing sound, with the check engine light on. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the EGR valve, possibly stuck open or closed. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle checked by a mechanic, who confirmed the EGR valve was faulty and replaced it, resolving the issues.

Vehicle emissions? Where do I even start with that? Is there any way to test the EGR valve itself without taking everything apart?

I didn't test the EGR valve directly. My mechanic said a faulty valve on the Astra was a common issue. Based on your symptoms with the Camry, it's probably best to get it checked at a workshop. Could save you a lot of time and headache.

Okay, I appreciate the advice! Took it to a mechanic and you were right, it was the EGR valve. Cost me 355€ to replace, but now it's running like new again. Thanks!

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my old Opel Astra, a 2014 diesel. Reduced engine power and the check engine light were the first signs for me. Have you checked vehicle emissions? It could well be the EGR valve stuck open or closed.
