Camry Idle Speed Error

Alright Camry crew, I'm pulling my hair out! My 2005 Toyota Camry with the gasoline engine is giving me fits. She's only got 39748 km on the clock, but the check engine light is on and it keeps storing an error code related to idle speed. The worst part? It stalls at idle sometimes, especially when cold. I'm pretty sure it's the idle air control valve. I pulled the throttle body and intake and MAN, was it ever contaminated! Anyone else seen this kind of crud buildup causing issues with idle control?

I had a similar problem with my old Opel Corsa. It wasn't exactly the same, but the symptoms sound familiar. My engine would stall at lights, and the idle was all over the place. Is your throttle body electronic or cable-operated? And, have you checked for any vacuum leaks around the intake manifold? Those can cause erratic idle issues too.

Good shout about the vacuum leaks, I'll double-check those hoses. As for the throttle body, yes, it is electronically controlled, which I believe also houses the idle air control valve in this model. Did you end up replacing the IAC valve in your Corsa, or was it something else?

In my case, the issue wasn't the valve itself. It turned out the electronic throttle body motor was faulty, preventing the valve from opening and closing properly. Because the car was quite old I decided to take it to a workshop rather than messing around. I would suggest that you do the same, if you are not 100% sure on how to proceed. They replaced the entire unit, and that fixed the stalling problem entirely.

Thanks for the insight! I took your advice and brought it into my local mechanic. Turns out I was right about the IAC valve, but it was beyond cleaning. The gunk had completely ruined it. They replaced the valve, did a thorough cleaning of the intake, and she's running like new again. Cost me 425€, but worth it to have her purring again!
