Camry MAF Sensor Symptoms

Hey, I've got a 2000 Toyota Camry with a gasoline engine that's giving me headaches. It's got 138k km on it. I'm pretty sure my MAF sensor is shot. Getting terrible fuel economy, engine stalls sometimes at idle, check engine light is on, and there's even a puff of smoke when I accelerate hard. Anyone else run into something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2000 Toyota Camry with 138,000 km is experiencing poor fuel economy, engine stalling at idle, a check engine light, and smoke during hard acceleration, leading to the suspicion of a faulty MAF sensor. Similar symptoms were confirmed in another vehicle, where the MAF sensor was the issue. The problem was resolved by replacing the MAF sensor, resulting in improved vehicle performance.

I had almost the exact same symptoms on my old Volvo. Turned out to be the MAF sensor like you suspect. You should check the air-fuel ratio, and you will see it is off.

Thanks! Was the Volvo doing all the same things – rough idle AND smoke? I thought smoke usually meant something else.

Yes, the Volvo had the rough idle and the occasional smoke puff. Ultimately, I took it to a workshop. They did confirm my suspicion and it was the MAF sensor.

You were spot on. Took it to a mechanic. They confirmed the MAF was bad. 365€ later and it's running like new again. Thanks for the help!
