Camry Steering Angle Sensor Issue

Alright Camry crew, I'm pulling my hair out here! I've got a 2005 Toyota Camry with a gasoline engine, and she's clocking in at 180303 km. Lately, the steering has gone bonkers. It feels like I'm wrestling a bear sometimes – way more effort needed, almost like the power steering is giving up. And to top it off, the steering wheel is vibrating like crazy! I've checked the power steering fluid, seems fine. Could it be something with the steering angle sensor? I've heard those can cause issues with the traction control and electronic stability stuff.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Camry. The steering angle sensor can definitely cause those symptoms. A faulty sensor messes with the electronic stability program (ESP), which uses the steering angle to determine the intended direction. Have you had your wheel alignment checked recently?

Wheel alignment? Interesting, I hadn't thought of that. So, if the alignment is off, it could throw off the sensor readings? And you said you had a similar issue... Was it the sensor itself that was bad, or something else causing it to misbehave? Any details would be super helpful!

Well, the alignment could contribute, but the sensor itself is the prime suspect given your symptoms. In my case, the coding of the steering angle sensor was faulty. This can happen due to various reasons and leads to incorrect signals being sent to the car's computer. Best bet is to get it checked at a workshop; they can diagnose it properly.

Thanks a ton for the insight! Took it to my mechanic, and you were spot on – the steering angle sensor coding was messed up! Cost me 195€ to get it sorted, but the steering is back to normal. Appreciate the help!
