Captiva Power Steering Issue

Hi, I've got a 2012 Chevrolet Captiva diesel with about 170k km on it. Recently, the power steering has been acting up. The steering wheel vibrates, and the handling feels spongy. Plus, there's an error stored in the error memory. Steering has become harder, almost like the power steering is failing. I've checked the hydraulic fluid level, and it seems fine. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Chevrolet Captiva diesel with 170k km experienced power steering issues, including vibrations, spongy handling, and increased steering difficulty. Despite the hydraulic fluid level being fine, an error was stored in the system. Possible causes included faulty electric steering connections or a damaged pressure hose. After checking these, it was found that a defective cable connection was the issue, which was resolved by replacing the cable, restoring normal steering function.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds like a dodgy situation. Error code could be helpful. Did you check the electric steering connections? Sometimes a faulty cable or plug can cause issues like that. Also, have you inspected the pressure hose for any leaks or damage? It could lead to reduced pressure and affect steering assist.

Thanks for the input! I'll check those connections. Where exactly are the typical electric steering connections located on the Captiva? And if the pressure hose was bad, wouldn't I see fluid leaking somewhere?

The connections are usually near the steering rack or the pump itself, follow the wires. Yes, you're right about the pressure hose, you'd likely see a leak. But it's always good to check. Still, considering the error code and the symptoms, could be electrical. Probably best to get it checked at a workshop. Could be a simple fix, like a loose connector.

Thanks a bunch! I took it to a local shop as you advised. Turns out it was indeed a defective cable connection, just like you suspected. They replaced it for 95€. Steering is back to normal! Appreciate the help!
