Captur brake vibration

Alright, car gurus, I'm stumped! My 2016 Renault Captur (gasoline engine) is giving me grief. At 241388 km, the brakes feel totally weird – kinda like they're vibrating when I press the pedal. I checked the brake fluid, and it looks okay. No obvious leaks. Could it be something with the brake calipers sticking? I am getting squeaky brakes and I am not sure what is going on.

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Renault Captur with 241,388 km is experiencing brake vibration, described as a shudder when pressing the pedal. The brake fluid appears fine, and there are no leaks, but the issue might be related to sticking brake calipers or worn components. Suggestions include checking the brake rotors for runout and considering the possibility of a voltage drop affecting the brake servo. The problem was resolved by replacing worn brake pads and rotors and addressing an undervoltage issue affecting the servo.

Vibrating brake pedal...hmm. Has the ABS light come on at all? When you say 'vibrating', is it a consistent pulse, or more of a shudder? It's possible a caliper is sticking, but usually that pulls to one side when braking. Have you checked the condition of your brake rotors? Excessive runout there could cause that sensation. Also, any recent work done on the car that might be related?

No ABS light, thankfully! It's more of a shudder than a consistent pulse, to be honest. I haven't checked the brake rotors closely yet. What exactly am I looking for in terms of 'runout'? And no, no recent work that I can think of related to the brakes or suspension.

Okay, a shudder points away from ABS issues for now. Runout refers to the amount the rotor deviates from a perfectly flat plane as it rotates. You'd need a dial indicator to measure it precisely. However, you can often visually inspect for scoring, deep grooves, or uneven wear, which suggests runout is present. Given the age and mileage, plus your description, I strongly suspect you have a voltage drop issue that is causing the brake servo to malfunction. I'd suggest a workshop visit. Squeaky brakes can be due to worn brake shoes as well.

Thanks for the insights! I took it to the workshop, and it turned out to be a mix of worn brake pads and undervoltage that messed up the servo. New pads, rotors, and a bit of electrical work, and it's all sorted. Total cost was 240€.
