Captur Camshaft Sensor Issue

I own a 2020 Renault Captur hybrid with 237658 km. Recently, I've been experiencing poor starting, reduced engine power, and an error message. Diagnostics point to a defective camshaft sensor. I've checked the sensor and suspect a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone encountered this?

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Renault Captur hybrid owner experienced poor starting, reduced engine power, and an error message, with diagnostics indicating a defective camshaft sensor. The owner suspected a defective cable or plug connection. A suggestion was made to scope the sensor signal to determine if the issue was with the sensor or wiring. Ultimately, a mechanic identified a corroded connector as the cause, resolving the issue.

Camshaft sensor issues on hybrids can be tricky. The error code is definitely pointing in that direction. Before condemning the sensor or wiring, have you scoped the signal from the sensor while cranking? A flaky signal could indicate interference or a failing sensor, but a clean signal suggests the ECU isn't interpreting it correctly, or you have timing issues. What specific error code are you getting?

I haven't scoped the signal yet, but the error code is consistent with a camshaft position sensor fault. Given the mileage, could timing chain stretch be a contributing factor, or is that less likely with the hybrid setup?

Timing chain stretch is always a possibility at that mileage, but on the hybrid Captur, a stretched chain usually throws separate timing correlation codes. Given that you're only seeing the camshaft sensor code, and you've visually inspected the sensor, I'd lean towards a wiring issue or potentially a faulty sensor despite appearing visually sound. I'd still advise a workshop visit. Replacing parts based solely on codes can get expensive, unless you have the equipment to scope it like I asked initially.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a local mechanic and, as you suspected, it was a corroded connector. Repair cost including diagnostics and parts was 95€. Appreciate the insight.
