Captur check engine light VANOS issue
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Renault Captur diesel owner experienced a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, suspected to be related to the inlet VANOS mechanics. The issue was identified as a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, which can affect variable timing and lead to increased fuel usage. The recommended solution was to have the vehicle checked at a workshop to avoid further complications, such as timing chain issues. The problem was resolved by replacing the solenoid valve.

Thanks for the insight! Oil sludge is a possibility. How did you solve the issue on your BMW?

On the BMW, it turned out to be a faulty solenoid valve. Messed up the whole timing. Honestly, I'd get it checked properly at a workshop. It's tricky stuff, and you don't want to mess up the timing chain. VANOS failure can be a nightmare.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were right – it was the camshaft solenoid valve. Ended up costing me about 250€. Appreciate the help!

Hey, that sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old BMW. The VANOS is a pain. Check engine light and drinking fuel like crazy. Could be the camshaft solenoid valves are faulty or maybe not getting power. Could be something with variable timing. Is there any sign of oil sludge?
