Captur immobilizer issue

I'm having a weird issue with my 2019 Renault Captur (gasoline engine). It's got about 56,000 km on it. Sometimes it just won't start – the engine cranks, but nothing happens. Other times, it starts for a second then dies immediately. I scanned it and there's an error related to the immobilizer. I'm thinking it's the key signal, but I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting. Any ideas?

The symptoms you describe certainly point to an immobilizer issue, specifically a problem with the key's transponder signal. Has the car key been recently damaged or been exposed to strong electromagnetic fields? Also, does the security light on the dashboard behave erratically when this happens, or does it remain constantly lit?

Thanks for the quick reply! The key hasn't been damaged as far as I know, and I haven't noticed anything unusual with the security light – it seems to behave normally. Could incorrect key programming cause these intermittent issues, or is that unlikely?

Incorrect key programming is indeed a plausible cause, especially considering the intermittent nature of the problem and the error code you retrieved. While it's possible to attempt reprogramming the key yourself, it often requires specialized equipment. Given the potential complexity, I would advise taking it to a qualified workshop for diagnosis and potential key reprogramming. It is a common problem, but a proper diagnosis will prevent replacing any unneeded components.

Thanks for confirming that! I took your advice and went to the workshop. They did a quick diagnostic and reprogrammed the key. Apparently, the key programming was indeed incorrect, like you said. Cost me 45€ and it solved the problem. Appreciate the help!
