Caravan Engine Overheating
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Nissan Caravan diesel is experiencing engine overheating and slow temperature rise, suspected to be due to a faulty map thermostat. The coolant appears normal, suggesting the thermostat as a likely culprit. It is recommended to inspect and possibly replace the thermostat housing during repairs. Ultimately, a workshop confirmed the defective thermostat and advised replacing the housing as well.

Good shout, thanks for that. I didn't pressure test it, but the coolant looks alright. Assuming it IS the thermostat... I'm guessing thermostat housing at the same time then?

If the coolant looks fine, a faulty thermostat is certainly plausible. While replacing the thermostat, carefully inspect the thermostat housing for any signs of damage. Given the labor involved, replacing it preemptively might be prudent. Then again, in most cases I would just visit a workshop.

Cheers. Appreciate the advice. Didn't want to go to the shop, but you are right! Looks like it's time to bite the bullet. For anyone that cares: workshop confirmed, it's a defective map thermostat (they quoted 350€). Doing the housing too while they're in there.

I’ve seen this before, I have a Caravan too. Could be the thermostat, but have you pressure tested the cooling system? What does the coolant look like?
