Cavalier oil pressure warning light

Hi, I have a 2020 Chevrolet Cavalier with a gasoline engine. Recently, a warning light appeared on the speedometer, and the oil pressure warning lamp lit up. I checked the oil level, and it seemed okay, but the oil color was darker than usual. Could it be related to the type of oil I'm using or maybe an oil additive issue?

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Chevrolet Cavalier owner experienced an oil pressure warning light, despite the oil level appearing normal but darker than usual. The issue was likely caused by exceeding the recommended oil change interval, especially with frequent short trips that prevent the engine from fully warming up, leading to oil degradation and sludge. The solution involved an oil change and filter replacement, resolving the warning light issue. Regular maintenance and adhering to oil change schedules are crucial to prevent such problems.

Dark oil is definitely something to pay attention to. When was the last time you changed the oil and oil filter? Sometimes exceeding the maintenance interval can cause the oil to degrade faster, leading to sludge and contamination. Also, what kind of driving do you typically do? Short trips can be harder on the oil than longer ones. Just trying to get a better picture.

Thanks for the info! The last oil change was about 13,000 km ago. Could that really be the culprit? I do mostly city driving, a lot of short trips. Also, does the engine oil brand have a significant impact, or is it mostly about the maintenance interval?

13,000 km is quite a bit over the usual interval, especially with city driving. Short trips don't allow the engine to fully warm up, which means more contaminants can build up in the oil. While oil brand does matter to some extent, exceeding the maintenance interval is likely the primary cause here. Engine oil sludge is no joke. I’d get it checked by a workshop ASAP to be sure.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks a lot for the clarification! I took it to a local workshop, and they confirmed it was due to exceeding the maintenance interval. They performed an oil change, replaced the oil filter, and everything seems fine now. The repair cost me 165€. I'll definitely keep a closer eye on the oil change schedule from now on.
